Tool: Articulate Storyline 360
Type: Interactive Visual Timeline
Audience: Gaming enthusiasts, game design students, gaming journalists, museum or educational displays about gaming culture
The Problem
Gaming history is typically presented as boring, text-heavy chronological lists that fail to engage learners or create memorable understanding. Static timelines don't invite exploration or curiosity - learners passively read dates and facts without retaining them. This project transforms historical education from information delivery into an exploratory, visually driven experience.
Learning Objectives
• Identify iconic gaming consoles from each decade spanning the 1980s to 2020s
• Recognize key games that defined each console generation
• Understand the historical impact of each era on the gaming industry
• Navigate a visual timeline independently through exploratory interaction
My Design Decisions
• Why an interactive visual timeline over a scrolling text list?
Visual timelines create spatial memory - where something sits on the timeline becomes how learners remember when it happened. Color-coded decades add another layer of association that static lists simply cannot replicate.
• Why click-to-reveal layers?
Learner-driven discovery keeps curiosity alive. Non-linear access lets learners explore in any order, respecting different learning paths rather than forcing a single sequence.
• Why a dark, space-themed aesthetic?
Visual design is instructional design. The dark theme wasn't purely decorative - it matched gaming culture, created emotional connection, and increased engagement with the content itself.
• Why color-code each decade?
Consistent color language from the timeline markers to the information layers created visual continuity and reinforced decade associations throughout the entire experience.
Technical Highlights
• 5 color-coded decade layers (1980s through 2020s) with consistent structure
• Click-to-reveal interaction model with close buttons for learner control
• Duplicate layer workflow - built first layer fully, duplicated four times and edited for efficiency
• Color-coded visual system carried consistently from base slide markers to layer borders
• Concise content strategy - three to four bullet points per decade preventing cognitive overload
