Tool: Articulate Storyline 360
Type: Gamified Quiz / Dual Variable Assessment
Audience: Emergency preparedness educators, training programs teaching critical thinking, game-based learning enthusiasts
The Problem
Traditional quizzes treat all wrong answers equally - you lose points, but there are no escalating consequences or real stakes. Assessment without risk feels low-pressure, reducing engagement and memory formation. This project solves that by introducing a health system where wrong answers don't just reduce your score - they threaten your survival, creating authentic tension that forces learners to balance speed with accuracy.
Learning Objectives
• Apply survival knowledge to realistic decision-making scenarios
• Evaluate risk vs reward (wrong answers cost health, not just points)
• Demonstrate knowledge retention under pressure
• Analyze performance across two dimensions simultaneously
• Experience consequence-based learning where mistakes accumulate to failure
My Design Decisions
Why dual-variable tracking?
Health and Score together tell a richer story than either alone. A learner can score well but barely survive, or vice versa - two dimensions of performance create far more nuanced assessment than a single score.
Why a health deduction system instead of simple scoring?
Wrong answers threatening survival transforms assessment into a genuine stakes environment. This emotional tension improves memory formation and decision-making quality in ways traditional quizzes simply cannot.
Why four endings instead of pass/fail?
Perfect Survival, Survived, Barely Survived, and Death reflect the actual range of learner performance. A binary pass/fail loses the nuance that makes feedback meaningful and actionable.
Why game-over detection on timeline starts?
Placing the health check trigger on each slide's timeline start - rather than on individual buttons - created seamless automatic game-over detection. When health reaches zero, the quiz ends immediately on the next slide load, no extra triggers needed.
Technical Highlights
• 3 variables: Health (Number, starts at 100), Score (Number, starts at 0), PlayerName (Text)
• Health deduction system: -25 per wrong answer, game over at 0
• Game-over detection triggers placed on Q4 and Q5 timeline starts
• 4 conditional endings based on both Health AND Score simultaneously
• 10 feedback layers across 5 questions
• Complete variable reset system for unlimited replays
What I Learned
This project taught me that game mechanics and assessment design are not opposites - they reinforce each other. Understanding the health math (when exactly Health reaches zero across five questions) determined precisely where to place game-over detection triggers. That kind of logical, consequence-based thinking is what separates a functional quiz from a genuinely engaging learning experience.

Zombie Survival Quiz is a gamified e-learning module that combines quiz mechanics with scenario-based decision-making to create an engaging survival challenge. Learners respond to five survival-based questions where correct answers increase score and incorrect responses reduce health. Performance across both variables determines one of four possible endings. The module integrates a dual tracking system to simulate risk-based outcomes and promote decision-making through interactive gameplay. FEATURES: Health and score tracking 5 survival questions Feedback layers Game-over mechanism 4 performance endings Player name display ENDINGS: Perfect Survival – 100 Health, 50 Score Survived – Health above 50 Barely Survived – Health 1–50 Death – Health reaches 0 SKILLS DEMONSTRATED: Dual variable tracking Health deduction Conditional logic Scenario quiz design Performance endings Gamified learning
