Project Overview

Client Name: Neo Childcare Industry: Telemedicine / Maternal & Child Health Objective: Design a mobile-first telemedicine platform to connect first-time mothers in underserved Nigerian communities with pediatric care, vaccination tracking, and educational content. Scope: Strategy, Discovery, UX Research, Visual & Product Design, Iterative Prototyping, Developer Handoff Duration: 6 weeks

The Challenge

Nigeria faces a high child mortality rate, with over 7 million babies born without access to adequate healthcare. First-time mothers often lack reliable medical guidance, leading to poor health decisions.
The Jojolo team — backed by Neo Childcare’s 6,000+ member community — wanted to create a mobile-first telemedicine platform that would:
Make pediatric care accessible and culturally resonant.
Help mothers easily book appointments, track immunizations, and monitor development milestones.
Provide free community support via forums while sustaining growth with a hybrid revenue model.

The Solution

Research & Insights
Conducted Zoom interviews with both doctors and mothers in the Neo Childcare network to uncover their needs, fears, and motivations.
Learned that trust and simplicity were key to adoption — mothers valued reliable guidance, while doctors sought both recognition and fair incentives.
Performed competitive analysis of Babymigo, BabyCenter, and Omomi to identify opportunity gaps.
Discovered a unique differentiator: community-first design — a free, open-access forum as an on-ramp to paid features.
Balancing User & Business Needs
Designed a hybrid monetization model: free access to the forum for mothers, while premium features (appointments, tracking) were subscription-based or pay-as-you-go.
Introduced gamification for doctors and mothers: engagement badges (Silver, Gold, Platinum) built trust and encouraged ongoing participation.
Design & Iteration (Figma)
Low-Fidelity Wireframes: Focused on validating flows before visuals.
Onboarding for Multiple Children: Simple, upfront profile setup allowed tailored insights per child.
Milestone Tracking: Empowered mothers to record and follow key development events (e.g., first steps, first words).
Growth Charts: Enabled parents to monitor weight, height, and head circumference over time.
Immunization Scheduling: Provided clear reminders and guidance to ensure timely vaccinations.
Culturally Resonant Visuals: Crafted a warm, empathetic design language aligned with the trust and accessibility required for the target audience.

Gamification for Engagement & Trust

For Doctors: Badges and recognition boosted motivation and professional credibility.
For Mothers: Seeing a doctor’s badge added a layer of trust on top of medical credentials, reassuring them of quality care.
Enhanced engagement and retention for both user groups.

Outcome

The Jojolo app delivered a human-centered, culturally relevant telemedicine experience, resulting in:
Early adoption within the existing 6,000+ Neo Childcare mothers’ community.
A clearer and more intuitive health management journey, reducing barriers to accessing care.
A strong foundation for future growth and partnerships in maternal-child health services.
