This project was both exciting and uniquely challenging. We were tasked with designing and launching a two-sided marketplace application aimed at transforming the short-term service job experience. The client’s vision was to democratize access to flexible work—similar to platforms like Uber or DoorDash, but tailored for roles such as baristas, house cleaners, real estate agents, and dishwashers.

The platform was designed to support three distinct user types: candidates, employers, and ZipShift administrators. Our team was responsible for both the design and end-to-end development of all three user experiences using FlutterFlow.

After COVID-19, businesses struggled to find reliable short-term labor, while service workers faced limited access to flexible jobs due to slow, paperwork-heavy staffing systems.

ZipShift sought a streamlined, user-friendly platform to connect employers with prequalified candidates—supporting multiple user types and simplifying hiring through a seamless, web and mobile experience.

In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on service workers and businesses, the ZipShift team set out to create a more flexible, low-friction hiring solution. Their goal was to make it easier for businesses to find short-term help without the burden of traditional HR processes, while also empowering workers to pick up shifts on their own terms once prequalified—no long-term commitments or red tape.

We were brought in to design a seamless mobile experience for candidates and a robust web application for employers. The platform allows employers to easily post jobs, manage and review applicants, and make hires—all within a streamlined, intuitive interface.

Kaleo collaborated closely with ZipShift to create, develop, and launch an innovative two-sided marketplace. This platform empowers employers in the United Kingdom to efficiently find, hire, and compensate candidates.

By leveraging advanced technology and user-friendly design, the marketplace streamlines the hiring process, making it more accessible and efficient for both employers and job seekers.

We did some research on how best to implement the web application while making it cohesive with the mobile app we were building in FlutterFlow. We conducted research around Bubble, WebFlow + Wizard and Softr.

Deciding to build the web app within FlutterFlow allowed us to utilize some of the native features such as Chat and Push Notifications without having to do too much extra development work. This did provide some challenges such as Stripe Payments in Flutter Web and optimizing the apps for the web, but our team was able to take care of the proper steps in order to make the apps work seamlessly. We designed and developed the candidate app within the first 30 days of the project, while asynchronously designing and developing the web app for the employers, implementing the key features like posting jobs, managing applicants so that we could test those features early.

We encountered some challenges integrating Stripe for web, as FlutterFlow’s native Stripe support does not currently accommodate web-based payments. Despite that hurdle, we thoroughly enjoyed building this complex two-sided marketplace, which includes features like in-app messaging, shift applications, mutual ratings (for both shifts and workers), and seamless worker payments.

Additionally, we developed a robust admin panel for the ZipShift team, enabling them to manage payments, monitor ratings, and oversee all activity across the platform.
