Background + Context

In 2019, I traveled to Cambodia to work for a Cambodian Hair Salon: Serge Comtesse Sensory Prestige. While in Cambodia, I collaborated with Cambodian students, who studied and the American University of Phnom Penh.

Project Charge

  1. Recruit hair stylists to take part in workshops hosted at Serge Comtesse. These workshops will allow hair stylists to become educated on the Schwarzkopf Professional products, which can later be distributed to their salons for use and purchase.
  2. Create promotional material, including videos, marketing fliers and business cards, and a mock website

What we Created

Mock Website

At the time, the hair salon had no website, which made it difficult for people to find their salon re Google, where they would (assumingely) book their appointments. This was the main focus of our project. In under a week, we filmed, took photographs, interviewed salon stylists and created a mock website using Wix.

YouTube Ad Video

To help with advertisements, one of the members of our group led charge on creating a YouTube video ad. It was so interesting to see how the style of video creation differed in the US versus Cambodia. What resonated with our client, wasn't what would typically resonate with clients in the United States.

Facebook Refresh

Our team also refreshed their Facebook page with relevant pictures and English translations! This was a big part of the work we did because in Cambodia, Facebook is used much more than a website. Though, the two are equally as important because we are not only targeting Cambodian customers, but travelers as well. The salon needed to be niched down more, in order to represent the population that attends the salon the most: Cambodians. Facebook descriptions need to be direct and to the point with no typos.

Overall Learnings

  • Working with foreign students, we had to understand their style of communication. This was a great opportunity to strength our ability to work in foreign places and within cultures very much opposite than our own.
  • This inspired me to start building websites for clients back in the states!
