Dish Details - Designing a Recipe Blog Around the Joy of Cooking
Dish Details is a recipe blog built around a simple idea: helping people discover delicious meals they can prepare at home. From everyday dishes to desserts and comfort food, the website brings together recipes for different tastes and occasions.
I worked directly with the founder to design and build the website from scratch. The goal was to create a welcoming place where visitors could explore recipes easily, find something that interested them, and keep coming back as new content was published.
Designing for recipe discovery
With a food blog, the content is the main attraction. Visitors often arrive looking for a particular dish, while others simply want inspiration for what to cook next. The website needed to support both.
I approached the layout with content discovery in mind, giving recipes room to stand out through their imagery, titles, and placement. Rather than presenting the website as one long feed of posts, I organized the experience around distinct recipe categories, including main dishes, soups, cookies, desserts, and breakfast.
This structure gave visitors more than one way to explore the collection and helped make the growing amount of content feel easier to navigate.
Giving the content room to shine
Food photography plays an important role in how people discover recipes. I used the page layouts to give food imagery a strong presence while keeping the surrounding content clear and easy to scan.
The intention was to make browsing enjoyable without letting the visual presentation get in the way of finding a recipe. Clear headings, consistent content layouts, and straightforward navigation helped tie the experience together.
Building the website in WordPress
I handled both the design and development, building the website with WordPress and Elementor. This meant shaping the visual experience and then bringing it to life in a working website.
I structured the pages around the different ways visitors would explore the content, from browsing recipe collections to opening individual recipes. I also considered responsive layouts so the experience could work across desktop and mobile screens.
Because a recipe blog grows with every new post, the site needed a structure that could accommodate ongoing publishing without requiring the entire layout to be redesigned each time.
Creating room for future growth
The website was built to serve as an ongoing home for the founder’s recipes, rather than a static collection of pages. Its category-based structure gives visitors a starting point for exploration while allowing the recipe library to continue expanding.
That balance between presentation, navigation, and maintainability was an important part of the project.
The outcome
Dish Details became a dedicated online home for its recipe content, bringing different food categories into one organized experience. The finished website gives readers a clear way to discover recipes while providing the founder with a platform for continuing to publish and share new dishes.
For me, this project was about creating a website where the design supports the content, and where finding the next recipe feels like a natural part of the experience.
