News websites have a different job from most business websites. Content is published regularly, stories need to be easy to find, and the layout must accommodate everything from breaking updates to longer articles.

Guiding Light HQ is a US-based political and news publishing website. The goal was to build a website that could support consistent publishing while keeping performance, readability, and navigation at the centre of the experience.

The client also had a clear technical requirement: the website needed to be lightweight, without relying on a traditional page builder.

I built the website in WordPress using GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks. This approach provided a lightweight foundation and the flexibility to structure the pages without introducing a full page-builder layer.

Rather than treating the site as a collection of individual pages, I approached it as a publishing platform. The underlying structure needed to accommodate recurring content and make it practical to manage the website as new stories were added.

A news website can quickly become difficult to navigate when articles accumulate without a clear structure. Readers need to understand what they are looking at, scan headlines, and move between stories without unnecessary friction.

The build focused on giving news content a clear hierarchy and creating a layout suited to browsing and reading. The intention was to make the site useful both for readers arriving for a particular story and for those exploring the latest coverage.

A publishing website has to work beyond launch day. New articles, changing headlines, and growing archives all place demands on its structure.

Using WordPress alongside GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks provided a foundation for managing and presenting content consistently. It also kept the build aligned with the client's preference for a lean setup rather than a page-builder-dependent website.

One of the important considerations was balancing the presentation of news content with the need to keep the implementation lightweight. A news website still needs a clear visual hierarchy and a readable layout, but those decisions should support the content rather than add unnecessary complexity.

The project was an exercise in making practical design and development decisions around the needs of a content-heavy website.

Guiding Light HQ was built as a WordPress news publishing platform with a lightweight technical foundation and a structure designed around regular content publishing.

The project reflects my approach to WordPress development: choosing tools that suit the client's requirements, keeping the site manageable, and building around how the website will actually be used.
