Motherhood is an incredible journey it's filled with love and self-satisfaction but it can also have its overwhelming moments. With the never-ending tasks, constant noise, consistent touch and the emotional requirements of raising children, the life of a mother can often be overstimulating. Which is why taking time to decompress is essential for our mental health and our overall well being. After taking some time to consult with moms of different variety, whether you're a working mom, a stay at home mom, a night shift mom or a entrepreneur, I think we can all agree that these 10 ways to recharge and unwind are vital for our sanity.
Fresh Air
The simplicity of fresh air will always be a top solution for decompressing. A quick five minutes can do the trick take a quick walk around the neighborhood or a moment of serenity sitting on your porch. While boosting your oxygen level your in turn naturally boosting your serotonin levels and boosting your mood.
2. Deep Breathing Exercises
Deep breathing can be an easy and effective way to calm your nervous system. By inhaling deeply for four counts, then holding for another four counts and finally exhaling for the last four counts, you're activating your parasympathetic nervous system that lets your body know you're safe.
3.Listening to Music
Having a soothing playlist and a pair of earphones can be a great way to decompress. Music is already a powerful tool of relaxation so use it to your advantage. The brainstem controls both sound processing and the heart rate, a nice slow tempo can lower your heart rate, breathing rate and your blood pressure.
4. Essential Oils
It's absolutely true that essential oils can have a calming affect. Inhaling scents like chamomile, lavender, jasmine and eucalyptus will stimulate the olfactory system in your brain and allow you to feel calmer and happier.
5.Light Exercise to Release Built up Tension
Physical activity is a very common and useful way to decompress. Committing to 10 minutes of yoga, pilates, running or dancing can improve your mood. Physical activity increases the production of endorphins in the body our "feel good chemicals" to help boost our mood. 6.Tea Time or a Coffee Break
Sometimes having a nice hot cup of Coffee or Tea is just what we need to get through the day. Some herbal teas like Chamomile will give you a calming effect to help you relax and a cup of coffee with its caffeine and antioxidants that stimulate your cortisol levels can help elevate your mood.
7.Social Media Detox
Being a mom means you're already overstimulated and overwhelmed most of your day and sometimes the world of social media only adds on to that overstimulation. Unplugging and allowing yourself to just be can help even out your day.
8.Doing your Favorite Thing
Engaging in an activity that you love can be a great outlet for your emotional well-being. Doing something hands on that you love will take your mind off of your daily stressors. Channeling your overstimulated mind into a creative outlet.
9.Scheduled Alone Time
As a mom time for yourself to just be with yourself is essential. Give yourself that time to nap, sit, meditate, pray and do nothing and just relax and reflect. Regular moments of being alone in solitude help recharge your mental health.
10. Laughing it Out
One of the best ways to release endorphins our "happy chemical" is laughter. Watching a funny video, show or movie can quickly turn your mood around for the better.
As moms we all know some days are tough and some are extra tough. We're constantly on mental alert for our children and taking a few moments of self-care no matter how small is so important. Doing some of these simple techniques can help us avoid burnout and ensures we're able to navigate motherhood to the best of our abilities. Taking care of ourselves is essential to taking care of our families.
