Objective: To design a sustainable makeup brand and convey the message of sustainability through storytelling in the design of the material and packaging design.

Background Research

As the world is becoming affected by global warming, a need for sustainability is becoming more urgent in all sectors. One of the most interesting industries when it comes to sustainability is the beauty industry. Globally, the demand for "natural or organic ingredients" or "sustainable" beauty products worldwide is rising.
Thailand also follows this trend in the rising demand for sustainable cosmetic brands and products.

How might we create a makeup product that strives to meet the demand for the growing green cosmetic products in Thailand?

Product Conceptualization

There are many ways in which we can contribute to the sustainability and circular economy concept through product design, one of which can be through the materials that are used to make the product. Not just make-up materials, but material waste from other products are one of the leading cause of ocean pollution in the world. Thailand is the world's 6th biggest contributor to ocean waste.
The statistic above highlights the importance of ocean waste in Thailand which can be used as a base concept for the makeup packaging and brand design.
As the concept revolves around the ocean, the theme of the brand and product would also be related to the ocean as well in order to showcase the beauty of the sea.

Ideation

With a proper concept, the process of sketching out possible designs for the packaging was conducted.
After ideating the possible design of the packaging, the final design was decided by merging multiple sketches and ideas altogether.
The final design sketch of the packaging is inspired by the sea waves and the sea floor as well as various plants that can be found within the ocean floor. The shape of the product is inspired by clams.

Product Variation and Storytelling

After properly designing the final design of the packaging, the design was then split into three different types of color. In the overall design of the makeup palette, the outer cover of the packaging is designed to reflect the sea wave, while the base of the packaging is designed to symbolize the glittering ocean floor. On top of the base, where the makeup elements lie, the Powderpuff, the shape of the highlighter, and the brush are all intentionally designed to showcase various plants and animals within the ocean floor.
The color of the package starting from the left to the right symbolizes the ocean with the light green representing the beach with all the greeneries and palm trees, the light blue version representing the shallow ocean floor, and the deep blue version representing the deep sea.

Design Material and Sustainability

Since the concept was to ocean waste, the materials that are used in making the packaging are all from recycled ocean waste materials.
