Link Building and Google's Love

Richard Mclachlan

A period of neglect had resulted in a local business directory losing Google's love. Once the market leader for counselling related searches in Sydney, rankings had dropped and traffic was way down.
The business owners was frustrated. Google seemed to be displeased with is model and much needed links were hard to come by. What to do?
a. I determined the main problem was though the site had different pages for different locations, they weren't that different, or locally relevant. The content was redone for these pages, new Google map listings created, new reviews gained. Onpage optimisation was improved, sitespeed was improved.
b. But the key was links. These had to come from Tier 1 news sites... how to get them? I built an application that scans journalist "request for source" sites and when it found a request, it wrote to the journalist on behalf of my client with an answer to their question, and a link to a page on his site with more information. The problem with this sort of link building is by the time you contac the journalist, another 50 people already beat you to it. So the key is speed. Journalists have deadlines. So this way, my client got his foot in the door in within 10 minutes, every time, and got 10 good editorial links this way. Top of niche rankings were restored.
