Objective/Challenge:

Design and implement a communications strategy for a national plastic recycling campaign in Australia. The main challenges were coordinating with 12 diverse environmental groups across the country, and understanding complex political and corporate stakeholders.

Strategy:

✔ Creating messaging focused on data and compelling visuals to convey urgency and garner political support.
✔ Utilizing social media, press releases, partnerships with eco-friendly brands, and influencers to maximize campaign reach.
✔ Engaging local communities through events and stunt marketing to encourage grassroots support.
✔ Positioning Boomerang Alliance as a leading voice in the push for policy changes, such as container deposit schemes and bans on single-use plastics.

Execution:

✔ Collated national data on recycling, litter, and land fill to create high impact statistics, and infographics.
✔ Partnered with brands such as Soda Stream, and influencers in surfing, jogging, and modeling niches.
✔ Coordinated a series of events in 10 local communities across the state including beach clean ups, live music, food, petition booths, and media stunts. Utilized video and photography content from these events for social media.
✔ Utilized press releases and petitions to gain national media coverage and put pressure on state premiers to enact policy changes.
✔ Coordinated with a diverse range of participants and stakeholders, from Greenpeace members and surfer enthusiasts to national journalists, Sea Shepherd activists, state premiers, corporate executives, and student groups.

Results:

✔ Contributed to the implementation of a container deposit scheme and single use plastic bans in all states and territories of Australia.
✔ Achieved coverage in national media such as The Sydney Morning Herald and Surfing Life Magazine.
✔ Achieved high participation rates in clean-up events and community activities, expanding the grassroots movement and reaching new demographics
✔ Effectively maintained composure and adaptability, even while drafting Facebook posts on the go — sometimes in the back of a pickup truck!
