Boba Tale immerses players in the fun of running a boba shop. Serving tea, ice cream and desserts. But something was missing: a proper tutorial. Without one, players were confused, disengaged, and not spending.

I stepped in to design a strategic onboarding experience that would:

Build player confidence

Improve early-game retention

No Guidance = Frustration New players had no direction and dropped off quickly.

Missed Monetization Moments Players didn’t understand the value of upgrades or IAPs early enough.

Fun vs. Functional The tutorial needed to teach mechanics without making the game feel slow or boring.

1. Experience Mapping

I mapped out the player’s emotional journey, from opening the game to completing their first order and identified when confusion, excitement, and decision fatigue were most likely to occur.

2. Strategic Copy Decisions

Every line was written with clear and exciting instructions.

3. Tone & Player Trust

I leaned into a tone that was:

Warm (like a helpful friend)

Cheerful (to match the kawaii aesthetic)

Trustworthy (to guide without overwhelming)

4. Visual + Narrative Onboarding

I worked under the assumption that mobile players have short attention spans, so:

Broke onboarding into micro-interactions

Included repeatable tooltips, not one-time info dumps

Since this was a concept case study, here’s what this kind of strategy typically improves:

Tutorial Completion – More players complete the first mission loop

Retention – Players feel “in control” earlier, so they stay

Soft Conversion – Players see the value of upgrades before being asked to pay

This project shows how I blend UX writing with strategic thinking to:
