Self-Initiated - Gumroad aims to enhance the user experience by adding a Tipping Screen that integrates tipping options (like buying a coffee for the creator), upsell opportunities, and the checkout process into a single, seamless interface. This feature will allow customers to tip creators, view upsell offers, and complete their purchase in one streamlined flow.

CLIENT PROBLEM

Gumroad creators are not fully optimising their revenue potential and customer engagement due to the absence of a streamlined process that integrates tipping, upsell opportunities, and the checkout flow into a single, cohesive interface. This lack of integration results in a less efficient user experience and missed opportunities for creators to maximise their earnings.

RESEARCH & DISCOVERY

In the initial phase, my primary focus was understanding the current user experience and identifying specific areas for improvement. I began by creating detailed user journey maps to chart the entire user experience from browsing products to completing a purchase. These maps highlighted significant pain points, such as the lack of a tipping option and the fragmented presentation of upsell offers.
Additionally, I developed comprehensive user flows to visualise the steps users take when navigating the platform. This process allowed me to pinpoint where the integration of tipping and upsell options would be most beneficial. By thoroughly analysing these flows, I identified critical areas where users experienced friction, particularly during the checkout process.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design process began with brainstorming and sketching various layout options using pen and paper. I created multiple wireframes to visualise different ways to integrate the tipping feature, upsell opportunities, and the checkout process.
From these sketches, I selected the most promising ideas and translated them into low-fidelity digital mockups using Figma. After initial user testing and feedback, I iterated on these designs to enhance usability. Once validated, I moved on to creating high-fidelity mockups on Figma. These designs incorporated Gumroad's brand elements and visual styles, resulting in a polished and detailed version of the Tipping Screen.

Hand-off to Developer - Final Redlines/Specs

To facilitate accurate implementation, I created detailed redlines and specifications for the final design. These documents provided precise measurements, spacing, and alignment details for developers, as well as the functionality and behaviour of each element within the Tipping Screen. These redlines included just some of the frames necessary to ensure every aspect of the design was clear and executable.

Marketing Content & UI Kit

Additionally, I developed marketing content to promote the new feature and a UI kit to maintain consistency across future updates.

CONCLUSION

By following a user-centred design process, I successfully developed a streamlined Tipping Screen that integrates tipping options, upsell opportunities and the checkout process. This new feature enhances the user experience by reducing friction and providing a cohesive, intuitive interface. For Gumroad creators, it opens up additional revenue opportunities through tips and increased upsell conversions. The final design, supported by thorough research, iterative design, and detailed specifications, ensures a cohesive and satisfying user experience. This project demonstrates the value of a comprehensive design process in addressing user needs and creating an effective, user-friendly solution
