Did you know that over 700 million adults across the globe are illiterate, with many struggling to write proficiently.

And according to UNESCO 170 million people in low-income countries could escape poverty if they would have basic writing and reading skills. 

Writing proficiency is a global problem that, if solved, would unlock so many possibilities for people from challenging environments.

First, users are prompted to create an account - here we utilized the Supabase integration for quicker development. Then users can read about the mission of the app and lastly, before entering the app, users are greeted with their WRITEY friends who we animated with Rive. We wanted to make the app fun and engaging, which is why the design is colorful and playful.

Once the users enter the main screen they can randomise the word which they’ll practice how to write. They can choose the length of the word, its complexity, and script type. The app then randomly generates a new word and users can start their practice.

Next, they have to write the word down on a piece of paper and scan it through our in-app camera. Here we created a custom widget utilizing camera package for flutter that allows access to the device camera, customizing the overlay and capturing photos. 

Then the AI does its magic! We used OpenAI’s 4.o model with newly introduced structured outputs which allow you to have responses, that are 100% compliant with the JSON schema you want the answers to be in.

Once the written word is scanned, users get structured feedback that tells them what mistakes they did and what they need to work on. If we try again, you’ll see the results are improved.
