RMG Networks: sell what it does — the how can wait for page two

Some products explain themselves; ChalkboxTV wasn't one of them. RMG Networks (later Korbyt) had built something genuinely novel — a cloud-managed system that turned an ordinary TV into a marketing channel, blending a business's own customized signage with live television. I provided UX and visual design, usability consulting included, for the marketing site that had to explain the idea and sell it, across every page the pitch needed to cover. The whole challenge fit in a sentence: make an unfamiliar product instantly make sense.

A channel hiding in the TV on the wall

ChalkboxTV turned the screen in the lobby, the gym, or the waiting room into a targeted marketing surface — powerful, and to a first-time visitor, completely abstract. Nobody wakes up shopping for "cloud-managed signage that blends with live TV." So the site's first job wasn't to describe the platform; it was to make a stranger picture it working in their space.

Lead with the outcome, not the technology

A platform this layered can drown a visitor in how it works before they grasp why they'd want it. I kept the site pointed at what it does for you — "Turn Your TV into a Powerful Marketing Tool" — and organized the story across a tight set of pages, each with one job. Home carries the promise, fast. Products & Services shows the how — the pitch, a How It Works section, and the cloud messaging app itself. Resellers makes the channel pitch. Contact turns interest into the next step. Consistent, plain, and built to make a novel product feel approachable rather than intimidating.

The channel the business ran on

Resellers wasn't a footnote — it spoke to the partners the whole business model depended on. RMG paid its authorized resellers upfront commissions plus regular residuals on the contracts they closed, aimed at firms that resell TV programming or provide A/V installation into SMB, bar and restaurant, healthcare, education, and government markets. That page had to sell a business opportunity, not just a product — a different reader with a different question, given its own clear surface.

Contact did double duty: ChalkboxTV was publicly announced in February 2013 at Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas, with commercial availability planned that April through the reseller network, so the page worked as both an event announcement and a concrete next step.

What it comes down to

A new-category product lives or dies on whether a stranger can picture it working for them. The craft here was restraint: keep the outcome loud, the mechanics tidy, and give a complex signage platform a marketing site simple enough to actually convert. This was UX and visual design for the marketing site — I don't have campaign outcomes to quote, so I don't.

RMG Networks built ChalkboxTV — a cloud-managed system that turns an ordinary TV into a marketing channel blended with live television. Genuinely novel, and to a stranger, completely abstract. I designed the marketing site whose whole job was to make it instantly make sense.
