Rowan Black is a tattoo artist specializing in blackwork who operates a private, appointment-only studio. The website needed to feel like an extension of his craft - bold, intentional, and unapologetically premium.
The Challenge
Most tattoo artist websites either look outdated or blend into the same Instagram-feed aesthetic. Rowan needed something that communicated exclusivity and skill while still being functional enough to drive appointment requests. The design had to attract clients who value craftsmanship over walk-in convenience.
The Approach
I built the visual identity around a stark black-and-white palette with off white accents a natural fit for a blackwork specialist. The typography is minimal and editorial, letting the tattoo photography do the heavy lifting while maintaining a high-end gallery feel.
The layout balances portfolio showcase with conversion. Every section reinforces either trust (artist bio, process breakdown, testimonials) or action (appointment booking, contact form).
Key Design Decisions
Headline that filters: "The Kind of Tattoo You Won't Regret" - speaks directly to clients who want quality over price
"On The Board" portfolio: A corkboard-style gallery with polaroids and sticky notes that feels personal and authentic, showing work-in-progress and completed pieces with dates
4-step process section: Takes potential clients from "Share Your Idea" through "Keeping It Sharp" aftercare - reduces anxiety for first-timers
Artist-forward storytelling: "Meet The Artist" section builds connection before asking for the booking
Quote as social proof: "Black ink is timeless - it doesn't follow trends or fade with fashion" reinforces the artist's philosophy and attracts aligned clients
Appointment-only positioning: No walk-ins, no flash sales - the scarcity is the selling point
