Have you ever thought of climate change in a different outlook? Well, we have to view it as an urgent concern to human life. Think of the charging cyclones, do we have a part to play in this? What of deforestation?
This implies that human activities are part of the bigger problems we are currently facing. Therefore, we must view climate change as a danger to natural systems and a threat to human survival.
However, we should not forget the fact that we are major contributors-humans. So, let us look at this flowing monster in a way that inspires us to be better at it.
Monsters still never cease to exist. Slowly by slowly, one comes again, so silently that you cannot see it coming, almost like a tiptoe. Its unnoticeable signs barely foretold. Just as if it was waiting for the right time for it to strike, as much as it can, only without notice.
At night when no one is aware of it, no one’s watching, it comes vigorously and mercilessly sweeps property out of homesteads. Mattresses, utensils, and people are swept away from their homes to different locations. Some can try to save their child or two, yet others end up so displaced, not to be found, and even when found, their lives are sucked out of them. Do you know it even buries people in their own homesteads in the form of landslides?
Others end up on trees and hills or mountains, where they are convinced that it would not flow up there. And yes, it does not climb up there, but again, it will not just do nothing about it, I mean how can it? Of course, it does not just exist on land alone, but from above too, washing the innocent souls and trying to drain life out of them too! Oh, what a monster!
In other places, it even sweeps the houses away. Can you picture this, going to work early in the morning as usual only to see your house property float by the window as you go home on your matatu in the evening? Houses are being swept and carried away, the pressure unbearable.
Children cannot go to schools anymore, or at least not for now when it is still here with us. The monster has to be given time to do what it wants because not even the most supreme powers have any power over it, and if you would not wish to be swallowed by it, then you just have to obey what those who can at least try to see it have to say.
The worst thing one could hear is being ordered to relocate from a place where they have been born, raised, schooled and even married. That’s a place they have been and known all their lives. The fact that they should relocate and to nowhere in particular is so devastating. It could make sense for one to be told to move to a specific place for some time. At least at then, one will be assured of a home or place to call one as they wait, for if they do not get to move, the monster is indeed monstrous.
We are suffering the effects of the floods, we have lost our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and even our relatives to this horrendous monster called floods. People have lost their businesses, their houses, and even their families displaced because of these floods. The results of this crisis so far are way beyond the time they have taken.
If we all work together for a healthy planet we can evade this monster. Especially by ensuring the proper utilization of natural resources rather than artificial resources. And even when it happens to strike, let us be ready by raising the heights of existing dykes along various rivers, upgrading roads and bridges, and improving stormwater drainage systems. If we work together to ensure all the safety measures are implemented, we will be able to save ourselves and others from this monster we call floods.
