Zymoscope is an early-stage startup transforming the food and beverage industry with its innovative fermentation monitoring system. Combining hardware and software, their solution allows brewers to track critical fermentation parameters in real time, remotely and on any device, eliminating the need for constant lab presence.
The Challenge
It was necessary to design a mobile-first application capable of handling complex, high-density data while remaining intuitive, scalable, and reliable for operators working both in labs and on the go.
The key challenges I faced included:
✅ Displaying and managing large volumes of real-time data on small screens
✅ Creating a scalable data-visualization system for parameters that would grow over time
✅ Allowing users to interact confidently with critical operations without risking accidental actions
✅ Providing accessible ways to export, explore, and manage data for long-term analysis
1. Mobile-First App for Hardware Setup & Monitoring
The app serves as the primary interface for connecting, configuring, and monitoring Zymoscope devices installed on fermentation tanks. With most users accessing the system from mobile, I adopted a mobile-first approach while ensuring seamless adaptability across desktop.

2. Scalable Graph System for Complex Data
The main challenge of the interface was designing a graph capable of displaying extensive, multi-parameter fermentation data on a single screen without overwhelming users.

This solution ensures users can customize their view, reduce visual clutter, and focus only on the information that matters most for decision-making.

3. Structured Data Access & CSV Export
Users needed a clear way to access historical data and export metadata for deeper analysis.

✔ Metadata grouped by day using dropdown accordions
✔ Easy CSV exports for selected parameters
✔ Option to receive data via email for long-term workflows
This approach gives users quick, organized access to the data they need without navigating overwhelming blocks of information.
4. Safe & Intentional Batch Controls
Managing a fermentation batch is critical, and accidental actions can lead to costly errors. To prevent unintended interactions—especially when users are near the tanks—I implemented a sliding confirmation control.

✔ Slide-to-start/pause/stop button to reduce accidental taps
✔ Clear visual feedback confirming each action
✔ Significantly fewer batch interruptions caused by user errors
This ensures that high-impact operations require deliberate, confident user input.
