Designing OptiCCS Mobile App for Healthcare Workers

Hatchure Studio

Role: Lead Product Designer (Mobile App) Responsible for UX/UI design of a mobile app enabling healthcare workers to deliver, track, and report antenatal care (ANC) services across Nigeria.
Tools: Figma, FigJam, Notion, Adobe Illustrator
Timeline 3 Months
Overview: NPHCDA (National Primary Health Care Development Agency), under the NEMCHIC initiative, developed a digital solution to improve the delivery and monitoring of ANC services. The platform, known as Optimising Client-Centred Services (OptiCCS), includes a mobile app, web interfaces, and a data visualization dashboard.
I led the mobile design for the health worker-facing app, ensuring it was user-friendly, offline-compatible, and adaptable to rural field conditions, while integrating with Nigeria’s core health data systems (DHIS & PHC-IS).
Challenge
Design a scalable and intuitive app for healthcare workers in remote areas with limited digital literacy and inconsistent network coverage. The app needed to:
Function offline
Simplify complex health data input
Support real-time reporting to DHIS and PHC-IS
Allow easy communication and feedback between healthcare workers and central teams
Include multimedia educational content and forms
Approach
User Research & Discovery: Collaborated with field officers, supervisors, and technical advisors to map user journeys and pain points.
Wireframes & User Flows: Created task-focused flows for data entry, survey, animation viewing, contact access, and feedback submission.
Design System: Developed a modular design system tailored for Android-first experience, suitable for government-deployed mobile devices.
Prototyping & Testing: Interactive prototypes tested with health workers during field simulations.
Dev Collaboration: Created dev-ready handoff assets and conducted walkthroughs with engineers.
Design Execution
Home Dashboard: Simple visual layout showing ANC visit status, pending forms, and upcoming tasks
Form Entry Flow: Optimized for low bandwidth, with autosave and error prevention
Content Hub: Access to animations, health education material, and downloadable files
Feedback & Contact: Integrated staff directory and instant feedback module
Survey Feature: Seamless mobile-first surveys with offline storage and auto-sync on connection
Localization: Used simple iconography and visual cues to reduce reliance on text
Impact
Improved data accuracy and timeliness of ANC reporting
Enabled field workers to operate independently offline
Facilitated direct engagement between field health staff and central administration
Boosted staff education through shared materials and visual learning content
Achieved seamless interoperability with existing national health data platforms
Reflection
This project reinforced the importance of designing with constraints in mind—especially in public health and low-connectivity environments. Empathy-driven design, backed by field testing, ensured that the app served real needs.
