Client: J.R. Merritt Controls (U.S. industrial controls manufacturer)
Role: Sole Product Designer
Status: Delivered to client. Production deployment handled by their backend team.
The Problem
J.R. Merritt's purchasing team was running a 5-step quotation process that slowed down procurement decisions. The existing interface buried critical comparison data across multiple views, and purchasing agents couldn't quickly evaluate vendors by price, lead time, or availability.
What I Did
I owned the full design process from audit to delivery:
Audited the existing workflow — mapped the 5-step RFQ process, identified where purchasing agents lost time (vendor comparison was the biggest bottleneck)
Restructured the information architecture — consolidated the flow into 3 steps: Request, Compare, Approve. Built dedicated comparison views so agents could evaluate vendors side-by-side
Designed the full interface — Dashboard, Projects, Requests, RFQ Outbound, Quote Inbound, Vendor Comparison, and Settings. Every screen built with consistent navigation, breadcrumbs, and action menus
Built production-ready components — implemented the UI in Builder.io with reusable, modular components the backend team could integrate directly
Handed off to engineering — delivered clean, documented components. Final branding and production deployment were handled by the client's backend team
Key Design Decisions
Structured comparison views for vendor evaluation — purchasing agents needed to compare 3-5 vendors across price, lead time, and part availability in one view
Task-focused layouts — each screen answers one question: "What needs my attention?" on the dashboard, "Which vendor wins?" on comparison
Modular component system — built for scale so the client could extend to dark mode, additional workflows, and branding updates without redesigning core patterns
Delivered a production-ready frontend UI that supports real procurement workflows. Improved clarity and decision-making for purchasing agents through structured comparison views and task-focused layouts. Enabled faster handoff to backend integration with clean, modular, and scalable UI components.
