Overview

As a senior product designer, I took on an exciting project to create a payment system for a conference that only took Bitcoin. It was tricky because we had to make it work with the regular payment machines you see in stores, but without accepting regular money. We had to deal with some technical hurdles of using Bitcoin for quick payments.

Goals

100% transactions in Bitcoin
More than 90% success rate on transactions
Reduce cashier training before the conference to 15 minutes
Empower business and people to use Bitcoin
No critical transaction error

Challenge

The main challenge was to make it super easy for people to pay using any Bitcoin app on their phones. By building a system based on traditional fiat payment flow we were able to let conference-goers buy stuff using only Bitcoin, showing that crypto can work for big events as an instant payment method.

How might we help any merchant accept bitcoin?

Our research showed that cryptocurrency transactions often posed a challenge for staff and owners. By crafting an interface that closely resembled what they were already familiar with, we were able to minimize the learning curve.

How might we reduce friction in sales using BTC?

We knew that people might use different payment apps, to make it simpler for everyone, we decided to stick with just the QR code function as it is common for both crypto have users as for Brazilians using Pix system. That decision made users pay effortlessly and reduced the mental effort needed to handle various app processes that is required by most of crypto apps.

How might we reduce staff training time?

By prioritizing simplicity and user experience, we significantly reduced the learning curve, allowing staff with minimal crypto experience to quickly become proficient in handling transactions, ultimately enhancing efficiency for both staff and attendees at the conference.

Results

This project really showed the power of keeping things simple. We could've gone overboard with fancy crypto features, but focusing on what people actually needed made all the difference. Seeing everyone – from Bitcoin enthusiasts to normies – use the system without breaking a sweat was pretty cool. If I did it again, I'd probably test it with even more types of users. But overall, it was a good reminder that the best tech often feels invisible. Making crypto payments as easy as buying a coffee – that's what it was all about.
