5 bolting stars: it promises and it delivers, this story absolutely lives up to its hype! As the phrase on the cover says, I hadn’t read such a good fantasy story in over a decade. This book has awoken my fangirl side all over again and it’s been such a joyful ride, wink wink.

The Huger Games meet Harry Potter and add some great romance in the middle, plus its obvious own sparks: this is the story of a kingdom where young people are raised either to be a scribe or a rider. Violet Sorrengail, daughter of a famous commander, was supposed to be a scribe; she imagined her life between books and history. But her mother’s desires/orders change everything and in spite of her sister’s and her own wishes she ends up on Conscription Day presenting herself to compete to be worthy of being a dragon rider, with no physical training to be so. But with her sister’s help and her own witty and resolve there she goes with one clear thought: Mira would not lose another sibling.

But what would happen when she survives the parapet’s trail and enters the Basgiath college for riders only to encounter with the son of an executed traitor to the kingdom to be her Wing Leader? Mira told her to stay away from Xaden Roirson, that he’d want her dead to avenge his father’s death at the hands of her mother; but there’s something about him that makes it incredible difficult to stay the eff away from him. Will she be worthy of being a dragon rider and survive? Dive in this story to discover the adventures of Violet within Basgiath War College, the hidden treasons that await her, the mysteries to unravel, the friendships to make, the everyday dangers, the enemies to come, the development of her true self and the finding love in between surviving death.

Warning, please skip my impression of the characters if you don’t want to spoil anthing to yourself. I absolutely loved the building of the characters, to see Violet grow and start to trust herself was truly amazing, a fierce creature discovering just how fierce and amazing she could be, and how to stand her ground and defend her close ones as well.

Xaden is just, oh my, charming, powerful, unapologetic, soft behind his armor and a great partner who always trusted Violence, as he liked to call her. I trusted him from the beginning and liked that he didn’t try to put her on a crystal box but he taught her how to defend herself. Now that’s the useful thing to do in a world like that!

You can easily gather from that that I didn’t like Dain at all, like, never ever, I disliked how he was always trying to be the savior in a shining armor, against Violet’s criteria. He wanted to “protect” her at all costs and was always getting in the middle of her growing up and becoming powerful. We do not stand for that kind of man, no thank you. And, kind of spoiler alert, towards the ending, well, my suspicions where highly confirmed about him.

Also, I want to make a shout out to Rihanna and Liam because they were such good friends, lovely characters indeed.

And now, the dragons, I can’t stop dreaming about having one lol, it’d be such an honor. I love the bound between them, they’re fierce, loyal, witty and so damn powerful, just amazing.

Giving that the romance is a high ingredient in this story I have to stay that the connection between Violet and Xaden is pure fire. They got me swooning all over; they’re meant for each other. They make each other better and they stand side by side.

Summing up: great narration; good building and development of characters; good building of the story’s background as well. I listen to it on Audible and have to add that the narration was very good as well; I got all the right feelings while listening to it. Such and addictive fantasy, I’m grateful for Rebecca’s writing and imagination. I’m now diving into Iron Flames, so you’ll be hearing from me again soon.

Como dice la frase en la portada, no había leído una historia de fantasía tan buena en más de una década. Este libro ha despertado mi lado de fangirl nuevamente y ha sido un vuelo de mucho disfrute, guiño guiño. Los Juegos del Hambre se encuentran con Harry Potter y añaden un gran romance en el medio, además de sus propias chispas obvias: esta es la historia de un reino donde los jóvenes son criados para ser escribas o jinetes. Violet Sorrengail, hija de una renombrada comandante, debía ser escriba; imaginaba su vida entre libros e historia. Pero los deseos/órdenes de su madre lo cambian todo y, a pesar de los deseos de su hermana y los suyos propios, termina en el Día de la Conscripción presentándose para competir y ser digna de ser una jinete de dragones, sin entrenamiento físico para serlo. Pero con la ayuda de su hermana y su ingenio y determinación, allí va con un pensamiento claro: Mira no perdería a otro hermano.

Pero, ¿qué sucede cuando sobrevive a la prueba del parapeto y entra en la academia Basgiath para jinetes, para encontrarse con el hijo de un traidor al reino ejecutado, que es su Líder de Ala? Mira le dijo que se mantuviera alejada de Xaden Roirson, que él querría verla muerta para vengar la muerte de su padre a manos de su madre; pero hay algo en él que lo hace increíblemente difícil de alejarse.

¿Será digna de ser una jinete de dragones y sobrevivirá? Sumergite en esta historia para descubrir las aventuras de Violet en la Universidad de Guerra Basgiath, las traiciones ocultas que la esperan, los misterios por descubrir, las amistades por hacer, los peligros cotidianos, los enemigos que vendrán, el desarrollo de su verdadero yo y encontrar el amor al mismo tiempo que sobrevivir a la muerte.

Me encantó absolutamente la construcción de los personajes, ver crecer a Violet y empezar a confiar en sí misma fue realmente increíble, una criatura feroz descubriendo lo valiente y asombrosa que podía ser, y cómo defenderse y proteger a sus seres queridos también.

Xaden es simplemente, oh dios mío, encantador, poderoso, sin disculpas por ser quien es, suave detrás de su armadura y un gran compañero que siempre confió en Violence, como le gusta llamarla. Confié en él desde el principio y me gustó que no intentara ponerla en una caja de cristal sino que le enseñara a defenderse. ¡Eso es lo útil para hacer en un mundo como ese!

Fácilmente podés deducir de esto que no me gustó Dain en absoluto, nunca nunca, no me gustaba cómo siempre trataba de ser el salvador en armadura brillante, en contra del criterio de Violet. Quería "protegerla" a toda costa y siempre se interponía en su crecimiento y empoderamiento. No nos ponemos de pie para ese tipo de hombre, no gracias. Y, spoiler alert, hacia el final, bueno, mis sospechas sobre él se confirmaron altamente. También quiero hacer un reconocimiento a Rihanna y Liam por ser tan buenos amigos, personajes encantadores de hecho.

Y ahora, sobre los dragones, no puedo dejar de soñar con tener uno jaja, sería un gran honor. Me encanta el vínculo entre ellos, son feroces, leales, ingeniosos y tan poderosos, simplemente asombrosos.

Dado que el romance es un ingrediente importante en esta historia, debo decir que la conexión entre Violet y Xaden es puro fuego. Me hicieron suspirar constantemente; están destinados el uno para el otro. Se hacen mejores el uno al otro y se mantienen juntos a la par.

En resumen: gran narración; buena construcción y desarrollo de personajes; buena construcción del trasfondo de la historia también. Lo escuché en Audible y debo agregar que la narración también fue muy buena; me dieron todos los sentimientos correctos mientras lo escuchaba. Una fantasía tan adictiva, estoy agradecida por la escritura e imaginación de Rebecca.
