When I moved from Upwork to Contra, I wasn’t sure whether I was making the right decision.
Now? I’m never going back.
Contra has given me more than a place to find work. It has connected me with clients who value my professional perspective, trust my expertise, and invest accordingly. It’s also given me visibility, community and the space to grow from an independent designer into a collaborative studio that’s continuing to expand.
So, if you’re just starting out on Contra, take this as your sign to keep going. Show up, share your work and give it time. You never know what it could grow into.

I’m curious to know, since you’ve already completed eight paid projects, were all of them through Contra, or were some from outside clients? I’d really appreciate it if you could share some insights on how you landed your first $1K. 🙌
Thank you! The majority of my clients have come through Contra, only one of those projects was from an off-platform client. My first $1K came from a combination of winning a Contra challenge and landing a client through the platform. Sharing my work, participating in the community and applying consistently have all helped!

i joined contra a few weeks ago and it has been interesting to me too, the talents on here are truly astonishing and watching everyone share their journey makes me feel so inspired!
I just joined Contra and I’m still figuring out how things work around here, so I thought I’d introduce myself instead of quietly lurking.
I’m Mariya, founder, strategist and lead designer behind Mariya Design. I’ve worked internationally since 2015, and today I run a boutique branding studio focused on brand identity systems for premium and luxury-led brands.
Most of my work sits somewhere between identity, packaging and the wider system around them. I’m particularly interested in what happens after the logo: how typography, color, packaging, digital applications and brand rules actually hold together as the business grows.
One project I’ve been revisiting recently is SAE-REN, a premium beauty and wellness identity system. I’m currently rebuilding some of my case-study presentation system, so it felt like a good one to share here first.
And since I’m genuinely new to Contra, I’d love to hear from people who have been active here for a while:
What actually helped you become part of the community here?
