Objective: To develop and manage security messaging during a pivotal period for MySpace, ensuring clear and effective communication in light of significant transitions and challenges.
Background
During my tenure at Fox Corporation, I had the opportunity to work alongside a prominent Chief Security Officer (CSO), a former federal prosecutor, and a top attorney from Microsoft's legal team. My focus was on crafting security messaging during a time when MySpace was at the forefront of social media, surpassing Google in unique visits and navigating a major $600 million buyout by FOX.
Strategy Development
1. Contextual Understanding: Understanding the high stakes of the situation was crucial. With MySpace's explosive growth and subsequent transition, I worked to ensure that our messaging was both proactive and reactive to the evolving landscape of social media.
2. Key Messaging Themes:
Security Awareness: Emphasizing the importance of user safety and data protection.
Transparency: Building trust with users through clear communication about security measures and policies.
Adaptability: Addressing the changes brought about by the buyout and the new direction for MySpace.
Execution
1. Crafting Security Messaging: I developed comprehensive messaging around security protocols that addressed both internal and external audiences:
Internal Communications: Created training materials and guidelines for employees to ensure a unified understanding of security policies.
External Communications: Drafted public-facing communications, including blog posts and FAQs, to inform users about security features and best practices.
2. Collaborating with Legal Experts: Working closely with the CSO and legal team, I helped ensure that our messaging complied with legal standards and effectively communicated the company’s commitment to user safety.
3. Monitoring and Adapting Messaging: I established a feedback loop to monitor public response to our security messaging, allowing us to adapt and respond quickly to concerns raised by users or the media.
