“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.”Malachi 3:8, KJV
In the book of Malachi, God poses a profound question: “Will a man rob God?” This question isn’t just about money — it’s about stewardship, devotion, and how we honor God with the blessings He has given us. While many focus on tithes and offerings, the essence of this question goes much deeper, urging us to examine our hearts and lives. Robbing God involves much more than withholding finances; it can include neglecting worship, failing to honor Him with our time and talents, or turning away from His calling.
In this article, we will explore the spiritual meaning of robbing God, how we can address this in our own lives, and hear personal testimonies — including my own — of backsliding, repentance, and restoration.

What Does it Mean to Rob God?

To rob God means to withhold what rightfully belongs to Him. The Bible teaches us that everything we have — our lives, resources, and talents — comes from God. When we refuse to honor God with these gifts, we fall short of His calling for our lives. Let’s break down how robbing God can manifest in three major areas:

I. Robbing God of Worship

At the core of every believer’s life is worship. Psalm 29:2 declares, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (KJV). Worship isn’t just something we do on Sundays — it’s a lifestyle that honors God through every moment of our day.
When we neglect both personal and corporate worship, we rob God of the honor He is due. True worship is a choice, a daily commitment to exalt God in all aspects of life.
Pastor Daniel Reyes of Bible Baptist Church, Cebu City, shares: “Worship is not confined to Sundays. It’s a daily commitment to honor God with our thoughts, words, and actions. When we fail to worship, we drift away spiritually.”

II. Robbing God of Our Tithes and Offerings

One of the clearest ways we can rob God is by withholding our tithes and offerings. Malachi 3:10 instructs us, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (KJV).
Tithing is an act of faith that demonstrates our trust in God’s provision. When we withhold our tithes — whether out of selfishness, fear, or a lack of trust — we rob God of what rightfully belongs to Him.
Pastor Mark Dela Cruz of Manila Bible Baptist Church shares his testimony: “There was a time our church faced financial struggles, but we chose to trust God and tithe faithfully. Within weeks, we saw unexpected blessings that reaffirmed God’s faithfulness.”

III. Robbing God of Our Time and Talents

God has blessed each of us with unique spiritual gifts meant to be used for His glory. 1 Peter 4:10 says, “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (KJV). When we fail to use these gifts to serve God and others, we rob Him of the glory He deserves.
Pastor Andrew Santiago, a Bible Baptist pastor, emphasizes: “Every believer has unique gifts, and when we withhold them, we deprive the church of God’s intended blessing. Serving God through our gifts brings joy and fulfillment, and it is an act of worship.”

A Personal Testimony: How I Robbed God

There was a time in my life when I turned away from God in every area. I robbed Him not just in finances but in my spiritual walk. My priorities shifted; I became consumed with personal goals, and my faith took a backseat. I neglected worship, avoided using my spiritual gifts, and convinced myself that my resources were better used elsewhere.
I also distanced myself from the church. Looking back, I see clearly how I had been robbing God — not just in tithes, but in every aspect of my life. It wasn’t until a powerful sermon at Mainit Bible Baptist Church in Surigao del Norte, delivered by Pastor Nimrod Laurejas, that God convicted me through the words of Malachi 3:8. I realized that I had, in fact, robbed God, and I knew that it was time to turn back to Him.
At the time, I was struggling to regain my footing after a period of spiritual backsliding. My faith had weakened, and my heart was burdened with regret. But God, in His mercy, was calling me back. Slowly, I began to dedicate more time to worship, prayer, and reconnecting with my spiritual gifts. I focused on serving God in any way I could, even though I wasn’t yet tithing. While I’m still in the process of getting back on my feet, I can already see how God is restoring my life. Doors of opportunity began to open, and my faith deepened.
It was a gradual process, but through it all, God’s grace has been evident. I’m still working on fully surrendering my finances to Him, but the transformation in my spiritual life has been nothing short of miraculous.

Why Do People Rob God?

There are several reasons why people rob God. Here are three key causes:

1. Fear and Doubt

Fear is a major obstacle in trusting God with our resources. We often wonder if we will have enough, but Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (KJV).

2. Apathy and Complacency

Complacency can lead to spiritual apathy. It’s easy to become distracted by the busyness of life and neglect our spiritual duties. Revelation 3:15–16 warns against lukewarm faith, urging us to rekindle our passion for God.

3. Misplaced Priorities

At times, we prioritize our desires over God’s will. The pursuit of wealth, comfort, or success can lead us to forget that everything we have belongs to God. Jesus warned in Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve two masters…Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

God’s Promise to the Faithful

In Malachi 3:10, God extends an invitation: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse… and prove me now herewith… if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (KJV). God promises that when we honor Him with our resources, He will bless us abundantly. This isn’t limited to financial blessings but includes His protection, peace, and provision in all areas of life.
Pastor Noel Villamor, a seasoned preacher, shares: “God’s promises are unfailing. When we trust Him and obey, He opens the windows of heaven and pours out blessings beyond what we can imagine.”

Practical Steps to Stop Robbing God

If you find yourself struggling with robbing God in any area, here are a few practical steps to begin addressing it:
Examine Your Life: Reflect on areas where you may be withholding from God — whether it’s in worship, finances, time, or talents.
Commit to Worship: Dedicate daily time for prayer, Bible study, and worship.
Use Your Gifts: Actively serve God with your unique spiritual gifts, whether in church or through ministry.
Trust God’s Provision: Begin trusting God with your resources, even in small steps, knowing He will provide for your needs.
Be Generous in Tithing: When God leads, respond with joy and faith, knowing that He blesses those who give cheerfully.
