Street Furniture Renderings

OVERVIEW

Omos is an Irish company that designs and manufactures high quality bespoke street furniture, seen in public urban areas throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe.

THE CHALLENGE

Omos needed a set of high quality images to show their products in the best way possible, in a way that would be attractive to architects and urban planners. Given that public urban areas can be a harsh and busy environment – photographing real installations would not be the best solution in this case, I was commissioned to produce a set of stylish and photorealistic renderings.

ENVIRONMENT THEME

The first stage was to develop the visual style and atmosphere for the environment. I collected a range of reference images, showing a range of styles showing modern urban environments, with a range of lighting and atmosphere.

The client chose the 'Industrial' concept to reflect the idea of small batch manufacture, skilled crafts-people and modern architecture, the next challenge was to find the right balance of authentic grit versus modern, clean and sterile.

LOOK DEVELOPMENT

Based on engineering CAD models created by Omos in Solid Works, I created 3D scenes in Blender showing environments such as an urban park, industrial environments and modern minimal street scenes. We also considered using AI to add people and other props.

The chosen direction was a modern, minimal scene with polished concrete floor and raw concrete wall. The neutral colours and understated textures compliment the materials used in Omos furniture products - brushed stainless steel, uncoated Iroko timber and granite. We decided to keep the images minimal with a central focus on the Omos Furniture, without adding people to the images.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS

The team at Omos takes great care with the materials used in their products, which have to survive a tough life outdoors in harsh weather and sometimes rough treatment by the people who use them. So it was vital that these renderings would be the best representation of the products looking new, clean but not overly artificial.
The timber in particular changes colour as it naturally weathers. I created several versions of custom image textures to find the ideal tone, texture and variation in the wood grain.

The brushed stainless steel also required care to ensure its direction matched the shape of the product, over weld joints and with the right level of anisotropic reflections on circular details.

The images would be used together in sequence, so we wanted to keep the viewing angle consistent across all images, without extreme angles or strong perspective that could distort the shape of the products.

FINAL PRODUCTION

With the visual direction set, we selected a number of Omos flagship products to finalise. I refined the 3D models to remove manufacturing process details, like open weld joints or screw holes, which would not be visible in the finished real-life products. Finally adding subtle edge bevels for maximum realism.

THE RESULTS

I delivered a set of high resolution photorealistic images, currently used on Omos.ie and print materials. Plus animated video for other promotional and explainer uses.

From first concept image to final delivery took 4 weeks. Throughout the process, we communicated 2 or 3 times a week to review and approve the major details. The client was very satisfied with the end results.

Victor brings a rare and powerful combination of skills to the table: a foundation in industrial design that marries engineering precision with artistic flair, paired with years of expertise in photography, videography, and 3D modelling.
