APOPO Rescue Rat BackPack

APOPO Rescue Rat Backpack – Wearable Tech for Life-Saving Missions As the lead CAD designer, I designed a third generation of the specialized rescue backpack for APOPO’s HeroRATs — trained rodents that assist in disaster response and landmine detection. This project required a seamless blend of wearable technology, ergonomic design, and lightweight engineering to create a functional and comfortable device for these remarkable animals.

Scope of work:
•Designed an ultra-lightweight, compact electronics enclosure in the form of a rat backpack, meeting stringent requirements of under 30 grams total weight.
•Developed a slide-in style design to eliminate screws, minimizing weight while maintaining structural integrity and ensuring a precise fit for all components.
•Accommodated 10 components, including a camera, fan, and GPS antenna, in an enclosure with clearances of less than 1mm, requiring innovative internal layouts and assembly tools.
•Delivered 3D models optimized for 3D printing, alongside custom-designed assembly tools for component placement, such as tools for camera, fan, and antenna installation.
•Overcame significant challenges in size and weight constraints while incorporating features like active cooling and a watertight PTFE membrane for free airflow and protection.
•Resulted in a design that was lighter, smaller, and more efficient than previous iterations while fully meeting functional requirements.
•Tools: Fusion 360, with extensive creativity and problem-solving applied throughout the project.
•Collaboration: Worked independently, with regular feedback sessions involving the product owner and PCB designer to refine critical design aspects.
•Duration: 2–3 months, with over 30 hours of detailed design and iteration work.

Impact & Significance:
This project supports humanitarian efforts worldwide, enabling APOPO’s HeroRATs to locate survivors in disaster zones and detect hazardous materials with real-time data transmission. My design played a critical role in enhancing these life-saving operations.
