Portfolio Design & Digital Showcase: Dimitris Kolioussis

Dimitris Kolioussis is an artist whose work sits at the intersection of Byzantine tradition and modern expression. I was brought on to design a digital portfolio and editorial system that could showcase his vision to a global audience. The goal was to establish a refined visual identity that honored his classical roots while presenting his work in a sophisticated, contemporary context.
By blending Byzantine artistry with modern motion and layout design, I translated the artist’s essence into a cohesive digital experience. From initial branding and custom typography to the final portfolio structure, I led the creative direction to ensure his legacy felt as impactful on a screen as it does in a gallery.

My Role

As the Lead Graphic Designer and Creative Director, I led the development of the artist's digital and editorial presence. My responsibilities included:
Editorial Design: Creating a rhythmic, curated narrative of his most significant works.
Branding & Visual Identity: Developing custom typography and a curated color palette.
Layout Design: Balancing fine art imagery with clean, modern digital structures.
Portfolio Curation: Distilling years of creative output into a definitive visual summary.
Creative Direction: Ensuring a seamless transition from traditional gallery roots to a modern retail and digital environment.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to bridge the gap between fine art and a modern commercial context. Dimitris needed a way to showcase his technical mastery that felt premium without being stiff, and classical without feeling dated. The identity had to navigate a series of nuanced tensions—tradition and innovation, the sacred and the contemporary, the gallery and the retail space.
Visually, the challenge was to create a system that allowed the art to breathe while providing enough structure to guide the viewer. It needed to reflect his Byzantine-inspired aesthetic—rich, textured, and historical—while functioning within a high-end, minimalist digital workspace. Ultimately, the goal was to build a brand that didn't just archive his work, but evoked the sensory richness of his creative process.

Art Direction

The art direction was rooted in "Tactile Minimalism." I leaned into a sophisticated editorial system that prioritized bold, classical typography and a neutral, grounded palette. By focusing on the weight of the type and the rhythmic pacing of the imagery, I ensured the design felt intentional and high-end.
To honor the artist's legacy, I integrated Byzantine-inspired elements with modern layout principles. The use of custom typography serves as a bridge to his classical roots, while clean navigation and digital simplicity provide the modern edge required for a contemporary audience. Every detail was meticulously chosen to ensure that the art remains the focal point within a meticulously organized digital frame.

Results & Impact

The final result is a stylish, consistent showcase that brings Dimitris Kolioussis’ portfolio to life for a modern audience. The brand identity has laid a strong foundation for the artist to confidently enter new markets, from high-end galleries to sophisticated retail environments.
By prioritizing artistic power and digital simplicity, the design empowers the audience to engage deeply with his legacy. The work has not only sharpened his professional positioning but has also created a powerful branding tool that resonates with collectors and design-savvy audiences around the world.

Key Takeaways

Design as a Bridge: When working with classical art, the designer’s role is to provide a modern lens that respects the heritage while inviting a new audience.
Intentional Pacing: Editorial design is as much about the "silence" (white space) as it is about the imagery; it’s what gives the work its premium feel.
Visual Storytelling: A portfolio should be more than a list of works; it should be a cohesive narrative that reflects the artist’s unique spirit.
