Purr Comfort: A Calming App for Cats

I really enjoyed building this... 🐈

As a cat dad, my beta tester was Aslan, I built this for my pal, my fuzzball, my cheif feedback officer and now thousands of cat parents from around the world like it too! Purr Comfort, came to me as I was on the uber coming home from Aslan's vet appointment it was a routine checkup but he HATES cars / travel in general (he gets car sick) At home I sometimes play a cat playlist on Spotify, no idea how or why but it calms him down and he's less race-y when it's on. So this time I played it out loud in the back of uber and he almost instantly feel asleep. WOW! For the rest of the journey I could only wonder... Why and how does this even work!?

The Aha moment,

After a tonne of research and reading through endless Reddit posts and papers from veterinary alumni, I gathered that different frequencies, different vibrations have a positive effect on the feline species. So now it made sense that this Spotify playlist was so calming and was calming to Azlan. After maybe two to three weeks or more reading into this subject matter and exploring different playlists, I figured out that there are four core frequencies and comfort modes that cats are most receptive to. This became an app. It took me a month of development and fine-tuning different sounds and frequencies and playing around with haptic feedback to finally figure out a design for sound waves with purring overlays courtesy of Aslan and haptic feedback courtesy of Apple.

The confirmation Meow!

After weeks of iteration, rebuilding, and redesigning, I finally got the confirmation meow from Aslan. It was like a nod and a different type of Meooow! - it was like he was saying, "You done it dude, great job." I mean, I consulted him on every comfort mode / feature - The 4 modes consist of cuddle, sleep, miss you, and calm. Each one induced a different feeling and reaction. Cuddle was kind of up-tempo and didn't really affect his sleep much; it just kept him engaged and showed that I tried to appreciate him. The "miss you" sound is designed for when I'm on holiday and he's staying at my parents' house or with friends, and then I'll play that through speakers or when I'm back, sleep mode was inspired by the playlists within 5-10 minutes if he is feeling very calm, slow, and usually sleeps. The calming up play is when we are going to back from the vet or on long travels and flights, and that one has slower haptic feedback so vibrations. I just leave that in his comfort basket, and it works.

Right now, we have so many cat parents given us 5-star reviews and asking for more comfort modes. I may make updates to this, but this is started off as a indie / summer project for my feline friend, I may or may not make more time for this project in the near future. Purrcomforts.com
