Aethel & Co. — Redefining Digital Luxury for Sustainable Furniture

1. Overview & Business Impact

Client: Aethel & Co.
Role: Lead UI/UX & Brand Strategist
Timeline: 3 Weeks
Deliverables: Brand Strategy, Desktop & Mobile Web Design, Design System
Core Impact: Elevated Aethel & Co. from a traditional high-end furniture maker into a digital-first luxury showroom, connecting sustainability with modern aesthetic demand.

2. The Challenge: Translating Tactile Luxury into Digital Pixels

Premium physical craftsmanship often loses its texture, scale, and emotional warmth when flattened onto standard e-commerce layouts. For high-ticket items ($1,500+), generic product grids lead to low user engagement, high bounce rates, and hesitancy to purchase online without experiencing the materials in person. The primary challenge was crafting a digital experience that communicates weight, material quality, and architectural presence solely through pixels.

3. Brand Strategy & Positioning

To differentiate Aethel & Co., the brand strategy moved away from transactional design patterns toward an immersive digital sanctuary anchored by the philosophy: "Form Follows Feeling."
Editorial Narrative: Replaced aggressive sales pop-ups and dense matrices with architectural storytelling, positioning each furniture piece as an artistic investment.
Minimalist Positioning: Emphasized quiet luxury, sustainable material provenance, and spatial harmony, allowing high-resolution imagery and whitespace to drive interest.

4. Visual Direction & Spatial Aesthetics

The visual language draws inspiration from raw architectural materials, organic textures, and warm ambient lighting.
Color Palette: Warm limestone alabaster backgrounds ($#F5F4F0$), deep ash black typography, terracotta accents, and muted sage/olive tones.
Typography: High-contrast editorial Serif headlines paired with clean, accessible Sans-serif body copy for effortless readability across all screen sizes.
CMF (Color, Material, Finish) Integration: Highlighting natural grain oak, travertine stone, matte brass, and textured linen directly within interface hero sections.

5. Desktop Experience: The Digital Showroom

The desktop web application translates physical spatial design into an interactive digital gallery:
Asymmetric Hero Layouts: Asymmetrical image compositions introduce editorial pacing, allowing large architectural photography to breathe alongside bold value statements.
Editorial Catalog Views: Showcase items like the Aurum Vessel, Terra Chair, and Luna Light with spacious card containers and direct storytelling copy.
Detailed Product Pages: Feature interactive material selector swatches (e.g., Natural Oak, Smoked Ash), custom dimension guides, and integrated "Add to Cart" / "Find in Store" primary actions without cluttering the screen.

6. Mobile First: Fluidity Across Every Touchpoint

The mobile architecture ensures high-touch tactile storytelling remains seamless on smaller viewports:
Responsive Navigation: Clean top bars featuring minimal branding, search access, sliding cart drawers, and expansive full-screen overlay menus ("Discover Menu").
Stacked Storytelling: Vertically aligned visual cards optimized for smooth vertical scrolling, maintaining typography hierarchy and high visual clarity.
Thumb-Friendly Controls: Bottom-anchored action bars, easily selectable swatch selectors, and high-contrast call-to-action buttons for seamless mobile checkout.

7. Design System & UI Components

Built for continuous scalability and clean developer handoff:
Modular Grid System: Flexible 12-column desktop grid scaling smoothly down to 4-column mobile viewports.
Component Library: Reusable product cards, floating action buttons, variant selectors, and architectural notification banners.
Accessibility & Contrast: Fully WCAG AA-compliant typography scales, distinct focus states, and high-contrast color pairings for dark and light UI variants.

8. Results & Key Takeaways

By shifting from a standard e-commerce grid to an intentional, editorial digital showroom:
Elevated brand perception to match the premium physical quality of the furniture lineup.
Increased average session duration by engaging users through spatial storytelling and visual micro-interactions.
Successfully proved that digital platforms can convey the tactile luxury, sustainability, and craftsmanship required for high-ticket purchases.
