Architecture That Belongs

A concept brand and site for a fictional Perth architecture practice

Brand, Web Design, Web Development, Motion

What it is

Grounded is a concept project. No client — I invented the practice, wrote the eight projects, generated the imagery, and designed and built the whole site end to end. Self-initiated, held to the same standard as any client work.
It's also me building an argument I usually just post about.

The problem with architecture sites

Architecture firms lead with images. That's the problem. Most look great, but almost none say anything concrete about the firm, so everyone ends up looking the same. Beautiful imagery can't differentiate anyone anymore — a shortlist of five practices all look great, and the one that gets remembered is the one with a story to tell. A site built on pictures alone is a gallery, not a sales tool.
I believe architecture sites should stand on three principles:
lead with what makes you different, not what makes you the same
Go deep on case studies, explaining the problems you faced and how you solved them
Stand out on intent, design decisions with a reason behind them, the same way your built work has intent.
Get those three right and the site stops being a gallery and starts being a sales tool. Grounded is what all three look like at once.

Architecture that belongs

The practice runs on one line: buildings that belong to their place. Architecture that fits its site instead of fighting it.
That's the rule for the site too. Every effect earns its place. Images melt in and out at their edges as you scroll, blurring into the background so the page has depth instead of hard frames. Galleries flip from white to black so the work lifts off the page. Type sits layered over the imagery, reacting subtly to the mouse so projects feel like they sit in 3D space. That's principle three in practice: standing out through intent, not noise.

Hero

The hero doesn't show one building, it shows the mantra proven several times over. Invisible hover triggers swap it between projects as you move across it, so "architecture that belongs" is demonstrated across multiple builds, not just stated once. Shown, not told.

Navigation

The nav drops from the top centre instead of the usual top-left logo, top-right menu. Always on screen, never in the way. Easy to reach, easy to ignore until you need it. A small decision, made on purpose.

The builds page

The builds page runs on an asymmetric grid. Projects sit off-centre and at different sizes instead of in a tidy row. The same way a good building sits on its site, placed on purpose rather than dropped in a line. Behind the type, an ethereal blur and the floating Architecture that belongs strapline keep every project grounded in the practice's ethos. Move into the galleries and the background flips from white to black so the imagery stands out, each image responding to the cursor with a subtle depth shift. Projects sit slightly in 3D space, physical instead of flat.

Case studies

This is where principle two lives: the work shouldn't speak for itself.
Of course the renders and imagery need to be beautiful enough to create intrigue. But everyone has beautiful imagery, so it can't differentiate anyone anymore. What sticks is the story behind the image. Why the building is shaped the way it is, why that material, what problem it solved. That's what turns a pretty picture into something people remember.
So every project gets a full case study, not a photo dump. Underneath, all eight run through one CMS, each with its own template page, next/prev navigation and a slider, built to add to without touching code. The same structure that would let a real studio keep publishing work for years.

Final result

Grounded does the three things I believe all creative studio sites should do: leads with what makes the studio different, tells the story behind each project, and stands out on intent rather than noise. It's the site I point to instead of explaining what I mean, the full range in one place, brand, copy, design and build, every decision mine.
