The challenge
Meme coin trading apps are typically web based, cluttered with jargon, and intimidating for newcomers who have never held a self custody wallet before. The client wanted goodtech to bring a Robinhood level of polish and simplicity to a notoriously chaotic space, pre sale meme coin trading, while still handling the real complexity of wallet custody, seed phrases, and on chain transactions safely.
The approach
Studied consumer fintech apps in the crypto space such as Phantom, Backpack, and Robinhood to understand which security steps users trust and which onboarding patterns feel too heavy
Designed onboarding as a short, personal sequence, language first, then wallet color, so the wallet feels like a personal object being set up rather than a technical account being created
Used a physical card and wallet metaphor throughout, leather texture, card reveal, confetti on creation, to make an abstract concept, a self custody crypto wallet, feel tangible and rewarding to own
Made backup status a persistent, visible signal such as a Backed Up badge or a No Backup warning rather than a one time step, so users understand their security state at any point in the app
Introduced an ELO style score for tokens in the explore feed, translating volatile, hard to evaluate new coins into one simple, familiar number users already understand from other contexts
Design process
Technical implementation
Built a consistent onboarding flow pattern, progress dots, one question per screen, one primary call to action, reused across language, color, and later account setup steps
Designed a reusable wallet card component with handle, truncated address, and copy action, appearing consistently across the ready screen, recovery phrase screen, and settings to reinforce one visual identity for the wallet
Structured the explore feed around two clear states, Pre Sale and Migrated, with consistent list item components, thumbnail, name, ticker, price, ELO badge, percent change, so scanning many tokens stays fast
Designed a native feeling numeric keypad and quantity stepper for the Add Cash and Buy flows, matching iOS system patterns so financial actions feel familiar rather than custom built
Built the token detail view as a bottom sheet over the price chart, keeping context visible while completing a purchase instead of navigating to a separate checkout screen
Key Design Challenges Overcome
Making seed phrase backup, a step most users skip or fear, feel approachable, addressed by pairing the recovery phrase with a clear warning, one tap copy, and a choice between iCloud and manual backup rather than forcing one method
Communicating token risk and quality at a glance in a fast moving pre sale list, solved with the ELO score and percent left indicators instead of raw, hard to interpret on chain metrics
Balancing playful branding, confetti, color personalization, plain language, against the seriousness of handling real money and private keys, resolved by keeping celebratory moments in low stakes screens like wallet creation and keeping security screens like the recovery phrase sober and warning forward
Fitting a full buy flow, balance, quantity, fee, confirm, into a single bottom sheet without overwhelming the user, solved by defaulting to a small preset quantity and surfacing only the fee that matters at decision time
