One of the most challenging aspects of owning a pet-grooming salon is employee training and retention! This is due to
liability when training a groomer, risk that they will become your competitor, the time it takes to create a talented
groomer, and that training someone decreases efficiency and productivity.
To mitigate these risks, I created a training technique to ensure mastery before learning riskier skills.
All new groomers would be hired as a “Groomer Assistant”. This role will be trained in tiers rather than learning all skills at
once.
Tier 1 Skills:
Proper nail cutting and filing techniques
Proper ear cleaning and anal gland expression
Flea combing
standard bath processes
special bath processes
Proper towel drying
How to hand-dry and straighten fur
When cage drying is appropriate and how to safely use the equipment
Proper Brushing and De-matting Techniques
Tier 2 Skills (only after mastery of all Tier 1 Skills):
Shaving paw pads
Shaving body
Shaving legs
Sanitary shaving
Tier 3 Skills (only after mastery of all Tier 1 and Tier 2 Skills):
Proper scissor techniques
Rounding feet
Trimming legs
Blending and thinning scissor usage and
techniques
Head shaping
