Strategic Blueprint for Radio France's Audio Experience

Overview

Radio France engaged us for a strategy-first mandate to modernize the listening and editorial experience. The goal was not to ship code, but to deliver a clear decision framework, an implementation blueprint, and validated UX specifications that engineering teams could execute with confidence.

Brief

Produce a strategic blueprint that:
Unifies live, replay, podcasts, and editorial content in a coherent IA
Defines a persistent, accessible audio experience with clear states and behaviors
Aligns with RGAA accessibility requirements at the design and content levels
Improves discoverability via taxonomy, navigation, and SEO-friendly structures
Establishes governance, measurement, and a vendor-ready implementation roadmap

My Role

Strategy lead and UX partner. I ran stakeholder discovery, facilitated decision workshops, authored the IA and player specifications, defined accessibility guardrails, built validation prototypes in Figma, and delivered the implementation playbook and prioritized backlog.

Approach

Four-track engagement designed to create clarity fast:
Diagnose
Stakeholder interviews, content and journey audit, tech and ops constraints mapping
Gap analysis across listening continuity, findability, and accessibility
Align
Decision workshops on IA, player model, and content taxonomy
North Star principles and non-functional requirements set early
Blueprint
IA schema, navigation model, and topic hubs
Player specification with states, errors, and continuity rules
RGAA guardrails and content standards
Analytics and measurement plan tied to user and editorial outcomes
Validate
Clickable Figma prototypes for key journeys
Feedback loops with editorial and product teams before final sign-off

Challenges

Multiple teams and brands to align without slowing cadence
Designing a persistent audio model that remains legible and lightweight across contexts
Meeting RGAA expectations while preserving hierarchy, pace, and brand tone

Strategic Framework

Information Architecture: Programs, Episodes, Live, and Topics as first-class objects. Clear relationships, fewer duplicates, faster routes to listening.
Audio Experience Model: Persistent mini player and full player specs, explicit states, resume logic, error and reconnect behaviors, shareable deep links.
Accessibility by Design: Focus order, keyboard paths, contrast and target sizing, ARIA-ready labeling guidance, transcript entry points and caption placement.
Content Taxonomy and SEO: Topic hubs, canonical rules, structured metadata guidance for scalable discovery.
Governance and Ops: Roles, acceptance criteria, release checklist, and a cross-team workflow for continuous improvements.

Prototyping to De-risk

Figma prototypes covered critical flows: start listening, switch live channels, resume episodes, browse topics, and read related content. These were used to validate decisions and de-risk handoff, not to prescribe a visual redesign beyond documented patterns.

Measurement Plan

KPIs and events defined for listen starts, completions, player continuity across page transitions, topic hub entry and exit, search refinement, and accessibility-related interaction success.

Deliverables

Strategy deck and decision memos
IA maps and navigation model
Player specification with state diagrams and edge cases
RGAA accessibility guardrails and content standards
Taxonomy and metadata guidelines
Clickable Figma prototypes for key journeys
Prioritized backlog, roadmap, and vendor-ready implementation brief

Outcomes

Shared, organization-wide alignment on how live, replay, podcasts, and editorial content fit together
A validated player model and IA ready for engineering execution
Clear accessibility guardrails aligned with RGAA expectations
A practical roadmap with KPIs to guide build, QA, and iteration

Tools

Figma and FigJam for mapping and prototypes, documentation in a vendor-ready playbook.
