Conscryption: a translator for the invented scripts of cartoons
Vincent L. Anderson
Conscryption is a live translator, blog and forum for the invented scripts and ciphers of animated series such as Gravity Falls, The Owl House, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Transformers, Steven Universe and Ben 10.
What it does
Encodes English into 16 glyph scripts and 13 text ciphers, and decodes all 29 back to English.
Draws glyph scripts as SVG from font outlines, and traces a font from a printed key chart when no font exists.
Marks every letter that the key does not cover and every letter that is fan work, not canon.
Keeps a source record for each script, so each key can be checked.
Gives each series its own blog section and forum board. Forum sign up needs no email.
Uses essential cookies only. Page statistics stay off until the visitor allows them. No ads, no outside analytics, fonts served from the site.
Translate page: choose one of 29 scripts or ciphers, then encode or decode.
What I built
conscryption-kit: a Python package and command line tool with the cipher engines, glyph drawing and chart tracing (fontTools, OpenCV, NumPy, Pillow, Glaemscribe, eSpeak NG).
A JSON translation API and the JavaScript front end of the translate page. The translator does not keep the text that visitors type.
The Odoo site with fandom blogs and forums, plus a custom Odoo module for email-free forum posts and opt-in tracking, served behind Caddy.
Kit notes: one phrase in every supported script and cipher, each image the kit's own output.
One blog section per series: codes, ciphers and weekly news.
The translator at phone width (390 px).

A live web product I designed and built: it translates English into 29 invented scripts and ciphers from Gravity Falls, The Owl House, Avatar, Transformers and more, and back. It has fandom blogs, forums with no email sign up, and no tracking by default.
