Stock Alarm: designing an app that calls you when the market moves

Client: Stock Alarm — stock, ETF & crypto alerting app for iOS Role: Solo Product Designer Scope: Full app design — onboarding, alerts, stock detail, search, trends, notifications, settings, and monetization

The challenge

Most stock apps bury you in charts and expect you to keep watching. Stock Alarm flips that: set an alert, close the app, and get notified the moment your condition hits — by push, text, email, or an actual phone call. "Only wake up when it really matters" was the promise.

What I did

Made alerts the product, not a feature. The home screen isn't a watchlist — it's your alerts. Each stock shows its active alert count at a glance, and swipe actions toggle alerts on/off or delete them without leaving the list. The empty state doesn't explain the app; it pushes you straight into setting your first alert.
Designed a deep alert-creation flow that stays simple. Casual users get price targets and percent changes in two taps. Power users get trailing alerts, MACD limits, bearish crossovers, and volume deviation triggers — clearly marked as premium, each with a plain-language explanation of when it fires. Every alert type ends at the same screen: choose your channels (push, email, text, phone call) and set it. One mental model, whatever your level.
Designed for the phone call. Getting called by an app is unusual, so the experience earns trust early: onboarding explains the channels upfront, and a built-in test call lets users hear it work before a real alert ever fires. Small thing, big difference in whether people believe the product will actually deliver.
Designed the full stock detail view. Price chart with multiple timeframes, statistics, technical indicators, and news — plus the alerts you've set on that stock, editable inline. Everything a decision needs, one screen deep.
Designed the monetization layer end to end. Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers with clear feature ladders, monthly/yearly toggle with savings badges, a well-timed annual-discount prompt, free trial entry points, and — just as carefully — the cancellation and account-deletion flows. Retention screens that respect the user tend to convert better than ones that trap them.
Covered the unglamorous 80%. Empty states, error states, seen/unseen notification states, form validation, keyboard interactions, disabled states. The stuff that makes an app feel finished rather than demoed.
