🌱 Discovery

The problem

Creating and delivering value to customers is challenging. 9 out of 10 startups fail, primarily due to a lack of product-market fit and marketing issues. Moreover, 45% of companies lack a clear marketing strategy, as developing a smart advertising plan is both expensive and complex.

The solution

The founders have been gathering experience in every niche of digital marketing - from strategy and communication through graphics, web development, media buying, performance, and analytics. From the perspective of advertising specialists working at agencies, they have been observing a marketing rollercoaster: the lack of standards, the hegemony of huge advertising agencies, and the absurdly inflated Martech market, making entrepreneurs dizzy.
They took up the challenge of creating a platform that would gather all their experienced insights and encourage other growth hackers to share their tactics. As a result, a revolutionary tool began development to solve any marketing problem and help users execute strategies automatically without external tools.

The context

DigitalFirst had already been released under 1.0 version, acquiring around 3,000 created accounts with more than half being active users. The platform serves two nearly equal user groups: 53% create marketing strategies for companies, while 47% develop strategies for individual clients. Most of the users are: Business owners, Marketing managers and Growth Hackers.
By analyzing quantitative data and gathering qualitative insights through conversations with Growth Hackers, I formed a personal opinion about the product which helped me recommend next steps during UX sessions.
I noticed many inconsistencies in the UI. The TaigaUI framework (version 2) had been initially implemented, which was itself confusing to use in product development. I recommended considering more common frameworks like AntDesign or TailwindUI, but this was quite challenging at that moment.

✨ Ideation and Execution

During the rapidly growing market of AI tools, DigitalFirst's scope of growth was constantly evolving. A tool for creating marketing strategies needed to integrate with most of the trending solutions used for communication, content creation, web development, analytics, and more.
This led to systematic planning sessions and extensive brainstorming meetings. A community of Growth Hackers actively using DigitalFirst also provided us with valuable qualitative insights. As a result, we produced numerous flows, benchmarks, sketches, and wireframes, which we iteratively analyzed until we had a complete concept ready for design or implementation.

First-time user experience

❌ The onboarding process had too much friction for new users, who struggled to understand how the product works.
❌ The biggest issue was the conversion rate on the pricing page, where almost half of the users were dropping off.
To solve this problem, I tested the onboarding flow and conducted a quick audit. Then I presented the following recommendations to the product team:
💡 Simplify the account setup process. Remove the complicated contextual wizard that led to no valuable output. Include an onboarding video that already existed in promotional resources.
💡 Implement a reverse trial. Unlock all features of DF for a limited time, including the onboarding video.
✅ Create a Strategy Generator. Instead of giving immediate access to DF, I prepared a separate flow allowing new users to generate valuable data related to their goals. This solution was initially selected for implementation but was further expanded into a new feature called "Connected strategic processes."

Mobile version audit

❌ The mobile version of DF had numerous issues. Some screens lacked responsiveness entirely, displaying the desktop version instead.
✅ I conducted an audit and recommended several UX improvements for the developers to deliver an accessible mobile version.

Dashboard refinement

❌ The current layout presented a general action center with shortcuts already available in the sidebar.
💡 I presented a proof of concept to create a valuable starting point, delivering a better overview of daily tasks, activities, and tactics execution tracking.

New features and integrations

ChatGPT

🧩 Integration with the ChatGPT model for contextual purposes. The release of ChatGPT-4 in March 2023 forced us to maximize the potential of this new version.
✅ We incorporated ChatGPT as a separate functionality and developed a Marketing Assistant - an enhanced Content Generator with a template library and prompt source code. This allows users to refine generated content with ChatGPT for more precise outputs.

Strategic Hub

💡 Concept of simplifying marketing campaigns by integrating all features into a linear flow. A step-by-step process from general canvases to producing assets for specific activities. However, this concept was shelved during internal testing due to its complexity and the numerous steps required before asset generation.

Graphics Creator

🧩 We integrated stability.ai to enable graphic asset generation.
✅ I presented a simplified approach to asset generation without advanced integration options. As a result, we implemented a Graphics Creator feature to generate visual assets for specific marketing tactics or other purposes.

Asset Library

❌ Users struggled to locate previously generated content, such as content and assets, as they couldn't remember which activity or tactic it was associated with.
✅ We aggregated all user creations in one central location. From this hub, users can easily navigate back to the appropriate context for further work.

Landing Page Builder

💡 Another valuable feature was landing page generator tailored for specific campaigns such as lead generation, promotion, event registration, and product launch announcements. I prepared a simple proof of concept, but implementation proved challenging due to unresolved issues including integrations, domain connections, and hosting options. Although highly valuable for users, this concept has been postponed for delivery in version 2.0.

Connected Strategic Processes

✅ An evolution of the previously created Strategy Generator. By selecting the most valuable features for users and connecting them into an automated wizard, we created a flow that can generate a marketing strategy in minutes. The output includes business canvases, communication strategy, campaign key message, target audience, marketing channels and tactics, content strategy plan, and campaign execution.

Future plans

We often referred to the second release in our discussions. Ideas postponed for valid reasons or decisions were gathered in a backlog for implementation in the improved version DF 2.0.
One of the references we used to visualize DigitalFirst's intended direction were apps like Notion and Obsidian, where users just start typing. Our vision is to create a sandbox AI tool that uses the "second brain" method, where a non-linear structure allows users to work on strategies dynamically while keeping every asset connected.
