In this art study, I delved into the intricate world of texture and portraiture, focusing on my sister as the subject. The primary objective was to authentically capture the distinct textures - specifically, the freckles on her face, the folds of her hands, and the intricate textures on her top.
Rather than emphasising shadows, I opted for a high-contrast approach, steering clear of excessive blending to maintain the textured essence of the work.
The decision to utilise a black and white palette aimed at accentuating the textures, allowing the depth to be conveyed through tonal variations instead of colour.
Executing this study within a tight timeframe of one week added an element of urgency. Despite the time constraints, it clinched the title of Best Up-and-Coming Artist at Shearer’s Arms Gallery. Additionally, it secured my place in the esteemed Art Society associated with the gallery.
The artwork was also shortlisted for Top Arts, a prestigious exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Although another artwork of mine made the final cut.
