IntimacyMetrics – Helping Couples Check In, Without Checking Out

Designing IntimacyMetrics — A Pay-As-You-Go Relationship Tool That Helps Couples Understand Each Other Again

How It Started

This wasn’t just another UX project, it was something personal.
A co-worker who believed in my work referred me to a project that felt different.

“It’s a tool for couples. A private check-in to help them understand where their relationship really stands. We want it to be honest, not clinical. And we need it to feel safe.”

That immediately pulled me in. Because we all know how easy it is for couples to drift apart especially in the chaos of life. And often, they don’t need therapy. They just need a place to start the conversation.

The Problem

Modern couples are overwhelmed. They're busy, often disconnected, and unsure where things stand emotionally or physically in their relationship.
What they don’t need is:
A calm space to reflect
A simple way to check in
A clear, personalized insight they can act on
And that’s exactly what IntimacyMetrics set out to deliver.

Research & Insights

Before diving into design, I spent time understanding:
What makes couples hesitate to open up?
How can we deliver emotional value with minimal effort?
What level of data is enough to feel seen, but not exposed?
We also studied competitors like Gottman Checkup and BetterLove, pulling what worked (clarity, flow) and leaving what didn’t (overwhelm, subscription fatigue).

Structuring the Experience

To solve for ease and emotional safety, we built a structure with no subscriptions, just pay-as-you-go access, and always something free to take away:
Everything leads gently toward reflection and small action.

Visual Identity & Interaction

We wanted the interface to feel like a safe conversation, not a test.

Design Choices:

Typography: Playfair Display (for warmth) + Inter (for readability)
Color palette: Warm peach, calm neutrals
Icons: Friendly, round, human not overly technical
Tone of voice: Empathetic, human, never clinical or cold

Admin Experience

To support ongoing learning, I designed a lightweight admin portal:
See user stats & survey trends
Detect anomalies (e.g., high drop-off in communication section)
Manage survey questions
Export reports in PDF/CSV
View sentiment analysis from open answers
Admin Dashboard Overview Screen

What I Learned

This project challenged me to design not just for usability, but for vulnerability.
How do you make someone feel emotionally safe online?
How do you guide people to honest reflection without overwhelming them?
The answers came not from UX textbooks, but from empathy, listening, and iteration.

Final Reflection

This wasn’t just about designing a product. It was about building a mirror and a nudge. A moment of calm in someone’s busy life where they can ask,

“How are we really doing?”

And maybe… start a conversation that wasn’t happening before.
And to think—it all started because a co-worker believed in me.
