Regional Train/Bus App – Gaining Market Share from the Industry Leader

The client operates a regional transport company managing buses and regional trains. They were struggling to get users to adopt their app, as most passengers preferred using the market leader’s app—the Swiss national rail service.
Together, we developed a strategy to focus on a more specific user group: tourists, one-time users, and those less familiar with traveling by train. By honing in on this segment, we aimed to better address their specific needs and improve conversion.

My role

After conducting a competitive benchmark, I analyzed the current app and website usage to identify key user pain points and primary goals. This research helped us pinpoint opportunities to differentiate from the market leader by offering a more specialized, user-friendly experience.
I then designed the main screens of the app and created a high-fidelity prototype to demonstrate core user flows and interactions, ensuring the new design was intuitive and engaging.

Results

The app was fully redesigned, both functionally and visually, to meet evolving market expectations and better align with user needs. We emphasized features and content most relevant to the target audience, such as clear tourist information and simplified navigation. User feedback from focus groups was integrated throughout the process, validating our design decisions and ensuring a seamless, user-centered experience.
