Challenge

Acura was about to release its latest electric vehicle (ZDX model) worldwide, however, its team needed to develop a mobile app for users to perform actions remotely and keep track of their new vehicle purchases — something like an early client onboarding to create even more engagement. The project had two previous phases where ideation process and setting up user journeys, were part of the delivery for the client.

Goal

During the third and final phase, the goal was to deliver the closest design for developers, so they could implement it and release the app for Android and iOS stores. The project already had some progress, however, there was not total consistency in terms of component and their style. There was a version in light mode which was more like a draft, but dark mode was more advanced. The client decided to prioritize the dark version. We were asked as a team to deliver this final version in around 12 weeks.

Process

We began by conducting an inventory of assets from previous phases, followed by creating a checklist for each journey to deliver. The Design System was in an early stage, with components that were not yet aligned with the brand and style we aimed for, requiring significant effort and maintenance. As the final design took shape, we assigned responsibilities to each team member, allowing us to move smoothly and systematically through the process. We held regular meetings with the team, stakeholders, and developers to ensure everyone stayed aligned.

My Role

I initially led the local design team, but as the project evolved, a project owner took charge, maintaining constant communication with the client and bridging the gap between the design team and stakeholders. Our team handled all necessary visual adjustments to meet the project goals. I personally worked on screens such as Tracking Orders, Main App Navigation, Onboarding Education, and Client Support (Customer Service Chat). I also contributed to the ideation process for the Main Screen and Charging Status Screen in collaboration with two design colleagues. Additionally, I was responsible for updating the Design System with new components as needed.

Outcome

After weeks of hard work, the app was delivered to the development team using Figma's design specs feature for coding by the end of October 2023. The app was later released on March 2024 at Google and Apple Store. It was a nice project full of challenges but great teamwork to deliver the highest quality and user experience for modern products.
