Beaufy had powerful ingredient intelligence and no interface to match it. I designed the full experience from first open to daily habit so users could trust the AI enough to let it change how they shop for skincare.
Context & Problem
Millions of people struggle to find skincare products that actually match their skin type.
They often purchase products based on influencer recommendations or online reviews, only to experience irritation, breakouts, or wasted money because the products aren't suitable for their skin.
At the same time, ingredient labels are difficult to understand, making it challenging for users to make informed decisions.
The challenge was to create an AI-powered beauty companion that helps users understand their skin and confidently choose products that fit their needs.
Opportunity
AI has the potential to transform skincare into a personalized experience.
By combining skin scanning technology with product ingredient analysis, users can receive instant recommendations based on their actual skin condition instead of generic advice.
The experience reduces uncertainty while helping users build healthier skincare routines.
Product Goals
Personalized Skin Analysis
Allow users to scan their face and receive AI-generated insights about their skin condition.
Product Scanner
Users can scan any skincare product before purchasing or applying it.
The AI analyzes the ingredient list and determines whether it is suitable for the user's skin profile.
If potentially irritating ingredients are detected, the app provides a warning and suggests safer alternatives.
Daily Skincare Plan
Morning and evening routines are presented as simple checklists that encourage consistency and reduce cognitive load.
AI with Transparency
Explain why a product is recommended instead of simply presenting a result.
Build Confidence
Help users feel more certain before buying or applying a product.
Encourage Healthy Habits
Design features that reward consistency and long-term skincare routines.
Key UX Decisions & Iterations
AI Skin Scan
Instead of asking users lengthy questionnaires, the app allows them to scan their face using their camera.
The AI detects skin characteristics such as:
Acne
Oiliness
Dryness
Uneven tone
Dark spots
This creates a faster and more personalized onboarding experience.
Reflection
This project explored how AI can reduce uncertainty in skincare by making expert-level guidance accessible through a mobile experience.
The biggest design challenge was balancing technical AI analysis with simple, understandable explanations that users could trust.
If I continued developing the product, I would add:
AI before-and-after skin comparison
Live camera skin health monitoring
Dermatologist-reviewed recommendations
Community reviews filtered by skin type
Personalized shopping integrations
Ultimately, the goal of the product is to help users make smarter skincare decisions with confidence, turning AI into a trusted beauty assistant rather than just another recommendation engine.
Key Success Metrics
90% onboarding completion
High skin scan completion rate
High product scan usage
Increased daily routine completion
Improved 7-day retention
High recommendation click-through rate
User satisfaction score above 4.5/5
Users & Insights
Target Users
Young adults aged 18–35 who actively purchase skincare products but lack confidence in choosing the right ones.
Research Insights
Users often:
Buy products because they trend on TikTok
Don't understand skincare ingredients
Mix incompatible products
Don't know their actual skin type
Need personalized recommendations instead of generic lists
The research highlighted the need for an intelligent assistant that simplifies skincare decisions.
Pain Points Discovered
"I don't know what products fit my skin."
Users struggle to identify products designed for their specific skin type.
"Ingredient lists are confusing."
Scientific names make products difficult to evaluate.
"I waste money on skincare."
Many purchases lead to disappointment because products don't address actual skin concerns.
"I don't know if my skin is improving."
Without consistent tracking, users rely on memory instead of measurable progress.
