Stædium Gamified Training

Context

Freeletics launched Stædium, a new connected strength training venture combining motion tracking, mobile, and gamified workouts. The challenge: design a product that felt engaging and seamless across hardware, app, and coaching while proving value in a competitive fitness market.

Problems

Strength training at home lacked motivation and a sense of progression.
Users needed clearer feedback on form and performance to stay engaged.
Workouts felt repetitive without gamified challenges or competition.

Goal

Lead product design end-to-end: shape the product vision, design interaction flows across app + hardware, and validate whether gamification could drive training consistency and engagement.

Actions

Defined the motion-tracking workout experience with real-time feedback and scoring.
Designed game-like progression systems (levels, challenges, visual feedback).
Collaborated with engineers to test motion accuracy and ensure reliable hardware–software sync.
Prototyped and tested early experiences with athletes, iterating on difficulty scaling and UI clarity.
Balanced new venture innovation with Freeletics’ brand and coaching philosophy.

Challenges

The hardest part was aligning game mechanics with fitness outcomes — too much “gaming” risked distracting from effective training. Through testing, we found the right mix: clear fitness benefits first, gamification layered to enhance motivation.

Results

Successfully launched the first Stædium beta, validating demand for gamified training with motion tracking.
User tests showed higher training completion rates vs. standard Freeletics sessions.
Established a design foundation for future features (competitive modes, social play).
