Concept piece with fictional example data. It's a 3-tab spreadsheet (Inputs, Forecast, Chart & Guide) that projects a business's cash a year ahead. Built and tested in LibreOffice Calc; saved as .xlsx for Excel.
Goal
To give an owner an early warning of low-cash months, so they can plan spending, collections or financing ahead of time.
Challenge
A forecast is only useful if it's easy to keep current. Income and costs that run for part of the year, one-off amounts and new line items all had to be handled without the user editing formulas.
Approach
Inputs tab: first forecast month, opening cash balance and a low-balance threshold.
Recurring inflows and outflows with a monthly amount, plus optional start and end months (1–12). Blank means all year, and the same start and end month makes a one-time item.
3 spare rows in each list that the Forecast picks up automatically.
Forecast tab: everything is calculated, with optional one-off adjustment rows for amounts not on Inputs.
Closing balances below the threshold turn red and the Warning row shows LOW. A check cell confirms the math reads OK.
Inputs are validated, and a Check column flags any line whose start month is after its end month.
