Kandil (قنديل) is Arabic for lantern. It's a money transfer app for families sending money home from the US. The sample flow sends dollars to Morocco. I created the name, identity, design system and eight app screens in Figma, plus the core flow in right-to-left Arabic. Fictional brand, created by Leo Reed. Not a real product.
Three marks, one lantern
I explored three directions: a route, a zellige star and a lantern. The route read like a maps brand, and the star looked too close to bank and government crests. The lantern won: a doorway that holds a flame, the light that guides the money home and the door it arrives at. It holds up at 20 px, sits next to both scripts, and the flame doubles as a progress signal in the app.
Three directions, each tested at app icon size and next to the Arabic name.
Color and type
Night blue and cream carry most of the brand. Saffron is reserved for the main action and the lantern light, and green marks what's confirmed or delivered. Bricolage Grotesque sets the headlines, and Readex Pro runs the interface in both Latin and Arabic.
Lockups in both scripts, app icon, palette, type, the arch pattern and a business payroll view.
Eight screens, sign-up to delivery
Welcome, ID check, selfie, home, recipients, amount, review and live tracking, which ends on a receipt.
The rate shows a 14:59 lock timer, and you see the fee before you pay. Send $500.00 and Samira gets MAD 4,915.20, with a $3.99 fee.
Pay with Apple Pay, a Visa card or a bank transfer.
The selfie frame is an arch, the doorway from the logo, and on the tracking screen the lantern is designed to fill as the money travels.
The full flow, from welcome to live tracking.
Right-to-left Arabic
Four screens of the core flow also come in Arabic: ID check, amount, review and pay, and the receipt. The layout mirrors, but the money doesn't. Amounts and currency codes stay left-to-right, digits stay Western, and the keypad keeps its order. Only icons that point a direction flip. The lantern, the logo and the share icon stay put.
English and Arabic pairs for ID check, amount, review and pay, and the receipt, with the RTL rules.
Website hero
A 23-second animated hero for the Kandil website. The amount types itself in, the rate locks, and one click on ع flips the page from English to right-to-left Arabic, in place. Then the lantern fills on the tracking card and the site switches to night mode.
Animated website hero, English to Arabic in one click. Fictional brand, not a real product.
Built for handoff
The Figma file has 13 color variables, 12 text styles and 7 components, including the button, recipient row, rate card and status step.
