Montessori in Your Home
There are so many benefits to incorporating Montessori in your home that you wouldn’t believe that it takes the burden of always being in a rush off your plate!
I promise if you make a few changes in your home it will mean your toddler and preschooler will be happier, more fulfilled in their joyful experiences – a hallmark of a Montessori inspired environment. Who wouldn’t want that for their family dynamic?
Here are a few easy ways to gently fold in some principles of the wise Montessori Method into your space.
·The Bathroom - Set up a child-height sink in their bathroom (or a stool), for hand-washing and teeth brushing. It should include a short sink or a stool at a regular height sink. It should have a small hand towel, soap dispenser, a toothbrush and a mirror at their height. This simple set up will foster a strong sense of self-care and independence in your child. This sense of autonomy is priceless in their development!
·Getting Dressed – Have your child choose his/her own outfits each day! Now, they must have freedom within limits. The adult would choose three outfits that are weather and age appropriate for their child and lay them out on their bed. The child would then, ultimately make the final decision on which one to wear that day. This gives the child a strong sense of choice and autonomy which boosts their self-confidence in a very unique way.
·Meal Prep – Have your child participate in meal preparations by way of standing on a stool at the kitchen counter next to the adult - helping out with vegetable slicing; measuring out ingredients; mixing; peeling vegetables and fruit; chopping using a child-safe knife and a slip-proof cutting board; pouring water using a child-sized jug and so on. This process of helping prepare the meals has a direct correlation with the level of enthusiasm and pride with which the child will enjoy the meal afterwards. This is paramount in getting your kids to eat all types of food, and being open to trying new ingredients as well to expand their palettes.
It’s a no brainer when it comes to involving our children in our everyday tasks that it has a direct impact on their ability to grasp the concept of time and grows their self-confidence and self-esteem as their abilities and capacities expand and develop over the varied experiences.
