Grain: a free browser app that turns anything into particles
Grain is a free app that runs in the browser. Drop in a photo, a 3D model or a scan and it turns the surface into 300,000 moving points of light you can orbit, fly through and record.
Nothing to install. It opens on a phone or a laptop, with 31 ready-made scenes to start from.
What you can do with it
Photos get depth: a flat picture becomes a field of points you can tilt.
3D models: GLB and glTF files load with their textures and animations, so a rigged character keeps moving as particles.
Music: play a track and the points pulse with the beat.
Fly mode: walk the camera through a scene with the keyboard or thumb pads.
Record: capture what you see and post it straight to your feed.
How it is built
Grain samples each model's textured surface into points and draws them on the GPU with three.js and WebGL. It holds 120 frames a second at 300,000 points in Chrome on an M2 Max MacBook, and scales the count down on slower phones.
Every preset lists its creator and license inside the app. The statue, shark, car and plants shown here are open CC0 scans from Poly Haven.
We build custom versions too: your product, logo or space as a living particle scene for a launch, an intro or a music video.
