Project: Student User Guide for Learning Management System (LMS)
Objective
The goal was to create a comprehensive, easy-to-follow user guide for students using a Learning Management System (LMS). The guide needed to:
Help new users quickly understand the platform.
Provide step-by-step instructions for common tasks.
Enhance the overall student experience by reducing confusion and support requests.
Process & Steps
1. Research & Requirement Gathering
Held discussions with the academic team to understand which LMS features students use the most (e.g., course enrollment, assignment submission, quizzes, communication tools).
Collected feedback from students about common difficulties faced while navigating the system.
Explored the LMS as a first-time user to identify potential problem points.
2. Structuring the Guide
I structured the documentation into logical sections, ensuring students could jump directly to the part they needed:
Getting Started – logging in, setting up a profile, and dashboard overview.
Navigating Courses – enrolling in courses, accessing lessons, and tracking progress.
Assignments & Quizzes – step-by-step guide for submitting assignments, attempting quizzes, and checking grades.
Communication Tools – using discussion forums, sending messages, and joining live sessions.
Troubleshooting & FAQs – common errors and quick fixes.
3. Writing & Detailing Steps
Each section was written in clear, simple language supported by step-by-step instructions. For example:
How to Submit an Assignment:
Log in to your LMS account.
Select the course where the assignment is posted.
Navigate to the "Assignments" tab.
Click on the assignment title.
Upload your file using the "Submit" button.
Confirm submission by checking for a success message.
4. Visual Support
Added annotated screenshots to illustrate each step.
Used callouts and highlights to direct attention to important buttons or options.
Ensured visuals were consistent in style for professionalism.
5. Testing & Validation
Tested each instruction by performing the actions on the LMS myself.
Asked a group of students to follow the guide and provide feedback on clarity.
Refined instructions based on real user testing to make them more intuitive.
6. Final Delivery
The final user guide was delivered in PDF format (for easy distribution) and web-based format (for quick reference). It was well-structured, searchable, and accessible on both desktop and mobile devices.
Outcome
Students were able to navigate the LMS independently, reducing support queries by over 40%.
Academic staff reported smoother assignment submissions and fewer late/missed tasks.
The guide was praised for being student-friendly, visually engaging, and easy to follow.
