Fluna is a digital marketplace connecting African agricultural exporters with global buyers — simplifying commodity sourcing through a transparent, trusted, and tech-enabled platform.
The product operates at the intersection of global trade, technology, and agriculture — an exciting space, but one where most digital experiences still look and feel like they were built in 2010. Fluna set out to be different: a marketplace that earns trust through design as much as through product.
The challenge was translating a complex cross-border trade ecosystem into a website that feels simple, credible, and immediately useful to both buyers and exporters — regardless of where in the world they're logging in from.

The Challenge

1. Cross-Border Trust Is Hard to Establish Digitally

International trade is built on trust — and trust is built over years of successful transactions. A new platform has to establish that credibility through design, transparency, and clear communication before a single deal is done.

2. A Two-Sided Marketplace With Different User Journeys

A global buyer and an African agricultural exporter have completely different questions when they arrive. One wants to know what products are available and how sourcing works. The other wants to know how to list, how to get paid, and how to reach international buyers.

3. The "Old Trade Platform" Aesthetic Problem

Most agricultural and commodity trade platforms look outdated — dense text, no visual hierarchy, no mobile experience. Fluna needed to feel like a modern technology company, not a commodity broker.

4. Simplifying Complex Trade Workflows

Import/export processes involve compliance, logistics, quality standards, and payment terms. Presenting this without making the platform feel bureaucratic was a genuine design challenge.

The Solution

Trust-First Content Architecture

The site is built around sourcing reliability, exporter credibility, and marketplace transparency — not operational complexity. Trust signals appear throughout the experience, not just on an About page.

Buyer and Exporter-Specific Pathways

Clear, labelled entry points for each user type — with content, use cases, and CTAs calibrated to each audience's specific questions and decision criteria.

Motion Design That Communicates Platform Flow

Subtle scroll animations and section transitions reinforce the idea of connection and movement — matching the platform's role as a conduit between buyers and exporters across continents.

A Visual Language That Breaks the Category Pattern

Clean typography, generous whitespace, strong imagery, and a considered colour system give Fluna a visual identity that feels like a technology company, not a trade directory.

Outcome & Impact

Modern marketplace credibility. Fluna's digital presence now reflects the sophistication of the product, not the visual conventions of legacy trade platforms.
Dual-audience clarity. Buyers and exporters each find a clear path through the experience, with messaging calibrated to their specific priorities.
A scalable content platform. The CMS structure supports ongoing market insights, commodity resources, and exporter content that builds SEO authority and user value over time.

If you're building a marketplace or platform that connects two sides of a transaction, your website needs to earn trust from both simultaneously without confusing either.
I design and build marketplace websites that feel modern, credible, and easy to navigate, regardless of how complex the underlying business is.
