Spline Physics and Variables Scene for a Cubic Game 🎮

Project Information

Together with talented software engineer Jamie, I created a 3D interactive cube generation scene with a belt conveyor.
This scene features physics simulation and variable controls, and will be implemented in a browser-based game where users can create cubes and build 3D objects. The game is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2025.

Our Goal

Our goal for this project is to create 3D cubes that are generated from a pipe when the user triggers a Mouse Down event. The cubes will fall into a box on the conveyor belt.
Both the cubes and the conveyor belt are set up with physics properties, so the cubes drop realistically from the pipe, and the boxes move dynamically along the belt.
The conveyor belt continuously moves, pushing the filled box forward and bringing in a new empty box.
The cube's color is controlled by a variable, allowing the web developer to link this variable to the Spline scene via code. This enables users to select the cube color through the web browser, with real-time updates reflected in the Spline scene.

Modeling

All objects, including the UI, were created entirely in Spline.
The cubes and conveyor belts are designed with simple abstract shapes, but each material uses hard shading with outlines, giving them a 2D-style toon shading effect.
For the preview scene, I added simple UI buttons and links using Spline’s UI scene. Thanks to these UI components, the elements are responsive and adjust to different screen sizes.

Material

For our materials, the request was to use pastel color tones with hard shading and outlines. Jamie provided the base color palette, so I first created a 3D cube color palette based on it. Eventually, we refined the colors into this final pastel, light-toned set for rendering.
The combination of soft pastel colors and bold black outlines creates a toon-shaded, 2D-like aesthetic, paired with a playful UI design that perfectly matches the game Jamie is developing.

Physics Setting

The most challenging part of this project was implementing the physics and dynamic settings.
I began with a small test scene to try different settings.
Each small cube and the large box on the bottom conveyor belt use dynamic physics.
I created multiple test scenes with different settings and values to ensure proper collision between the cubes and the box, by carefully combining dynamic and positioned physics configurations.

Animation Setting

The animation itself is fairly simple — it runs the conveyor belt to push the cubes and boxes forward. For the final output, there will be multiple speed options, so I also created a 2x speed version.
The animation is triggered by the user's Mouse Down event.

UI Scene for Preview

For this preview, I added a UI scene with interactive buttons. You can click the “Change the Box” or “Create Cubes” bubbles to trigger animations and cube generation events.
The header was also created using Spline’s UI components. It is responsive but fixed in 2D within the 3D scene.
This was my first time using the UI Scene feature in Spline, and I found it really interesting. It's a great way to combine fixed UI elements with a 3D environment—almost like building an interactive website!
